PS Plus Extra adds surprise bonus game with zero fanfare

By Lee Brady,

PS Plus Extra has added another PS4 game, Anodyne, to its library without any announcement or mention from Sony.

Anodyne trophies might not have been mentioned alongside the new PS Plus Extra and Premium games for March 2023, but the game is now live on PS Plus Extra. It seems even Sony's attention was a little scattered, because this PS4 game snuck onto PS Plus Extra without a single mention.

PS Plus AnodyneThere's something eerie about this new PS Plus game.

PS Plus Extra gets bonus PS4 game Anodyne

In fairness to Sony, everybody's attention was a little scattered last month — for example, we were busy with our Tchia review, giving full attention to one of the best PlayStation indie games to date. Though to have a whole game join PS Plus Extra without a single mention is a little bizarre.

The new PS Plus Extra game in question is 2018's Anodyne — a top-down action-adventure with a touch of The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening about it. First released back in 2013, Anodyne has an ethereal, moody vibe about it, features Game Boy Color-esque pixel art, and if the game's trophies are anything to go by, it seemingly has plenty to see and collect to keep you entertained over a few play sessions (although no platinum trophy, unfortunately).
The real mystery here is how Anodyne managed to get on PS Plus Extra without an announcement from Sony. The subscription scheme has seen bonus games before — lucky Japan got Densha De Go on PS Plus Extra, for example — but never without some sort of reveal on Sony's part. All we know is that Anodyne was added to PS Plus Extra on April 4th, 2023, and the rest remains a mystery.

What do you think about this new bonus PS Plus Extra game? Will you be checking out Anodyne and it's bizarre, creepypasta vibes? Seriously, watch that trailer, the whole vibe is definitely off — of course the game that snuck onto PS Plus Extra mysteriously has eerie, dream-like energy. Let us know in the comments what you think.
