Sonic Frontiers trophies go faster with easier platinum update

By Lee Brady,

Sonic Frontiers' free 'Sights, Sounds, and Speed' update also makes unlocking the platinum trophy go much faster.

If you haven't collect all of the Sonic Frontiers trophies just yet, then you're in for some good news: the latest Sonic Frontiers update fixes the game's platinum trophy grind. The update comes a little late for PS5 and PS4 players who already own the game's platinum trophy, but at least new players can skip the mood-killing grind of one of the best Sonic games on PlayStation.

Sonic Frontiers update fixes platinum trophy upgrade grind

Reported over on Twisted Voxel, the trophy fix comes alongside Sonic Frontiers' free 'Sights, Sounds, and Speed' update, which also adds a photo mode, a jukebox, and new challenge modes for players to check out. Tucked away in the game's patch notes, however, is a far more important update: "When upgrading Sonic, multiple Koco can now be exchanged at once with the Elder and Hermit Koco."

The Elder Koco and the Hermit Koco are connected to four trophies in Sonic Frontiers: Hearty Hedgehog, Hardened Hedgehog, Hypersonic Hedgehog, and Herculean Hedgehog. The four trophies task you with upgrading Sonic's Ring, Defense, Speed, and Power Levels (respectively) to MAX, which you do by trading various coloured seeds to the Koco.
Players who have worked to unlock Sonic Frontiers' platinum trophy will vividly recall just how tedious these four trophies were to unlock. That's not because the trophies are challenging, or even because gathering the resources required to unlock them is time-consuming (you can stockpile them very quickly at the last of Sonic Frontiers' fishing spots).

No, the grind comes in only when you actually try to level up, as the Koco only let you level up each stat one at a time, and you need to do this 99 times for each stat to unlock the trophy. This wasn't so bad for the Elder Koco, who let you swap your Level 99 Ring upgrade over to your Speed, automatically unlocking the trophy. The Hermit Koco, however, required your to sit through a small animation and slowly press the 'X' button at least 188 times in a row.

Sonic frontiersThe culprit.

Thankfully, Sonic Frontiers now lets you hand over your upgrade seeds in bulk, which cuts roughly 40 minutes of the most boring kind of repetitive action out of the game's platinum trophy run. These kinds of frustrations added up to prevent Sonic Frontiers from joining our best platformers on PS5 and PS4 list, but now — well, maybe we'll just have to earn the PS4 platinum on a second playthrough to judge for ourselves.

Will you finally be cleaning up the Sonic Frontiers platinum trophy now that it's a far less grindy experience? And how have you enjoyed your time with the game overall? Let us know down in the comments below.
