There are two earlier games in the series to consider before jumping in and collecting those Marvel's Spider-Man 2 trophies, the first of which is one of the best PS4 games ever made, so you'll definitely want to play that. However, you might be wondering if it's necessary before playing Marvel's Spider-Man 2 to play Miles Morales first, given it's a spin-off entry for the series. We'll clue you in without spoiling anything so you can make your mind up below.

Update: We've updated this story now that Marvel's Spider-Man 2 has been released to give a more definitive answer to the question of whether you should play Marvel's Spider-Man Miles Morales first.

Can you play Marvel's Spider-Man 2 without playing Miles Morales?

With the sequel now out and our Marvel's Spider-Man 2 review written, it's safe to say we now have a better idea of how much impact the events of Marvel's Spider-Man Miles Morales have on Marvel's Spider-Man 2. However, if you read our first approach to this question before Spider-Man 2 came out, you'll find our answer is pretty much the same: it depends on how you ask the question.
If your question is "Do I have to play Spider-Man Miles Morales before Spider-Man 2?" — then our answer is not really, no. While the spin-off is certainly a fun game that warrants playing if you have the time and can afford it, if you just want to jump into Marvel's Spider-Man 2, you should only worry about playing the first game in the series.

Marvel's Spider-Man (known as Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered on PS5) establishes the characters and the main plot points that the sequel works with, and there's very little overlap with the Miles Morales game. In Spider-Man 2, Miles' story centers around his wanting revenge on Martin Li — AKA Mister Negative — for events that happen in the first game. Very little of the main plot requires foreknowledge of the spin-off whatsoever.

Spider-Man 2Just got my PS5, guys — what should I play?

Certain characters get a proper introduction in Marvel's Spider-Man Miles Morales, like The Prowler and Ganke, but they only play support roles in the sequel or have stories relegated to Marvel's Spider-Man 2's side missions. Sure, you'll get a lot more out of the exchanges between Miles and his Uncle Aaron if you've played Spider-Man Miles Morales, but it's not vital to play through the whole game to pick up on that context.

Other characters from Spider-Man Miles Morales, like Miles' childhood friend Phin or antagonist Simon Kreiger, receive only passing references that you can absolutely miss if you're not looking for them. Beyond that, the spin-off provides players with a little more insight into Miles, the time he spends developing his powers, and his relationship with Peter, but nothing so vital as to ruin your time playing Marvel's Spider-Man 2 without it.
However, if you ask the question "Should I play Spider-Man Miles Morales before Spider-Man 2?" — then our answer is, obviously, yes. While I might have been a little bit more critical of the PS5 launch game in my Marvel's Spider-Man Miles Morales review, I still ultimately had an easier time getting into Marvel's Spider-Man 2 thanks to having played both previous games.

One smaller narrative detail you'll encounter while playing Spider-Man 2 deals with Miles coming into his own as an adult and learning to take responsibility on his own terms. This is a fine story and it's handled well in the sequel, but it feels especially poignant if you've witnessed the character grow from start to finish, and Marvel's Spider-Man Miles Morales provides a great deal of that growth for the character.

Spider-Man 2

If you're looking to just jump straight into Marvel's Spider-Man 2, do know you'll probably get by fine without having played either game in the series. Though, I'd really recommend you play the first game at least before diving into one of the best PS5 games so far. As for Spider-Man Miles Morales; that's your call. If you've played Marvel's Spider-Man 2 already, what advice would you give new players? Let us know down in the comments.
