PS VR2 launch lineup titles miss top 40 most popular PS5 and PS4 games

By Kes Eylers-Stephenson,

While there is no doubt that PS VR2 is a niche in the gaming market, even its biggest games couldn't conquer the top 40 most played PS5 and PS4 games for the week.

The upcoming PSVR 2 games are outlined and players are now plugging into the PS5 to experience virtual reality worlds and collect Horizon Call of the Mountain trophies. However, PlayStation's latest hardware hasn't got any native games in the top 40 most played on PS5 and PS4.

Looking at the top of the chart, you can see that Hogwarts Legacy has been surpassed by FIFA 23 and has moved down to third place. However, it was a close call in the total player count margin between the two at a 4.6% difference. That's not entirely insurmountable if more players get a second wind and start picking up those Hogwarts Legacy trophies again.

While there are two interesting debuts on the chart for Wo Long Fallen Dynasty at a respectable 27th and The Forest (35th) on the back of that Sons of the Forest PS5 hunger, it's really the lack of PS VR2 games we want to highlight. Gran Turismo 7 is still in the chart after its PS VR2 support update bumped the game to 15th, but it's already lost the spot and is down one.

Players dedicated to the hardware had been picking up Horizon Call of the Mountain trophies to the degree that it ended up in 32nd last week (after a bit of an issue with region variants on our end hence we didn't talk about it last week, apologies). Now, though, the PS VR2 exclusive has already dropped off the list and is in 52nd place. It's nearly lost half of its total player count week-on-week resulting in a decrease of 44.1% overall. That is quite shocking for the headline game, even if it is exclusive to the niche hardware — we expected it to stick around for a little longer, but it seems day one buyers have played it and are done with it and there are no new users picking up the slack.

There are no other PS VR2 games on the chart's top 40, sadly, and the next VR2-supporting game we can find is No Man's Sky at 75th. What do you think of PS VR2's performance? Was it to be expected? Or did you expect more to shine? Let us know in the comments. Here is the PlayStation Chart for the most played PS5 and PS4 games for the week ending March 5th, 2023.
