Jedi Survivor set to follow in footsteps of Star Wars sequel tradition

By Kes Eylers-Stephenson,

Star Wars Jedi Survivor will continue the legacy of Respawn's new video game arm of the franchise, but news has come out about another way the team will carry on the series' traditions...

Everyone is starting to get really excited about getting to pick up those new Star Wars Jedi Survivor trophies and wield lightsabers all over again. However, it looks like Jedi Survivor might be the middle entry of a traditional Star Wars story arc.

Jedi Survivor might be the second game in a new Star Wars trilogy

Star Wars traditionally ran in threes throughout the film sagas, and it looks like Respawn has the same story arc in mind for Jedi Survivor as it aims to join the best PS5 games this April. Director Stig Asmussen, speaking to IGN, mentions that before anyone had even collected the last of the Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order trophies the team were in discussions over a second and third game.

"I mean, frankly, we were talking beyond [Jedi Survivor when negotiating a Fallen Order sequel]," Asmussen clarified. "I always wanted to see this as a trilogy. How can we take Cal and the crew to new places beyond what we were doing in the first game?

"We had a pretty decent idea of timeframe where we wanted Survivor to take place, what the stakes were going to be, what the tone of the game was going to be, what Cal was going to be up against, and how the crew was going to factor into that. And there's ideas of what we could do beyond that as well."

Well, this all would make a lot of sense, wouldn't it? The film franchise has come in sets of three with the original trilogy, the prequel trilogy, and the sequel trilogy — with Disney also releasing two spin-offs during its tenure (no, I don't want to hear about Caravan of Courage or The Battle of Endor). If Jedi Survivor was followed up, it would continue the trend of feeling like the most Star Wars the Star Wars franchise has been in a long time. However, we really do hope that it doesn't continue because — as TrueTrophies Staff Writer Lee puts it — the number three in Star Wars is "cursed."

Return of the Jedi was pretty poor overall with great moments, Revenge of the Sith was decent, and Rise of the Skywalker was a truly awful bit of backpedalling... then the games have one cancelled Battlefront 3 (at least), no Force Unleashed 3, and a fake Jedi Knight III in Outcast. Of course, there is also no KOTOR III. Cursed sounds are about right!

Amussen also noted it was "a pretty safe assumption" that Unreal Engine 5 will be what the game is developed for, rather than Jedi Survivor's Unreal Engine 4. Anyway, what do you think of this supposed Jedi trilogy? Are you in? Let us know in the comments below!
