It’s 2023 and the PS3 just received a new firmware update

By Sean Lawson,

The PS3 just received a software update and we are scratching our heads as to why this may be.

The PS3 is 17 years old at this point — yes, we are also in shock over that — and Sony has just given the prehistoric PS3 console a software update, Version 4.90. We wonder if this will have any impact on the performance of some of the best PS3 games you can play on the system at all.

This PS3 software is a surprising, yet welcome treat! This PS3 software is a surprising, yet welcome treat!

The 17-year-old PS3 console has recieved a software update in 2023

This new update doesn't give much information away, literally only saying that "this system software update improves system performance." The update was announced on PlayStation's official website and is now live on all PS3 consoles. You can check out that extra bit of system performance and see what it offers up — though, we imagine there isn't much to take note of.

The last update for the PS3 came out in May of 2022 with version 4.89 which brought changes to how you sign in to PSN, removed account creation, and discontinued a few other features on the PS3. The update before 4.89, Version 4.88, came out in June of 2021 and had the exact same description as the most recent update, "this system software update improves system performance."

While a little strange that Sony has put out a software update for a console that barely garners any of the company's attention these days, we can't say we are disappointed seeing this beast of a console receiving a little bit of love. What do you guys think? Happy to see the PS3 still receive support all these years later? Do you still use your PS3 console? Let us know in the comments down below!
