Forspoken flop leads Luminous Productions to dissolve into Square Enix

By Sean Lawson,

Luminous Productions has now integrated into the Square Enix brand following Forspoken's lukewarm PS5 reception.

Forspoken hasn't been the surefire success that Luminous Productions or Square Enix were hoping for. While we enjoyed the game — which can be seen in our Forspoken review — and had a blast earning all of the Forspoken trophies, it just wasn't enough for the game to be a hit. Following Forspoken's lackluster PS5 performance, Luminous Productions has now dissolved into Square Enix.

Luminous Productions has now integrated into Square Enix

The announcement was made through Square Enix's official website and it probably doesn't come as that big of a surprise for many of you reading this. The blog doesn't state where Luminous Productions will be placed within Square Enix, potentially Luminous will be spread throughout the various teams to help with all of the different IPs that Square Enix has in its repertoire — though that is just speculation on our part.

From the blog, President and Representative Director, Yosuke Matsuda, announced that Square Enix: "will merge its wholly owned subsidiary Luminous Productions Co., Ltd. into its wholly owned subsidiary SQUARE ENIX CO., LTD. effective Monday, May 1, 2023.

The merger is part of the Company’s efforts to further bolster the competitive prowess of the Group’s development studios, a goal set forth under its current medium-term business strategy... Combining the two entities will further enhance the Group’s ability to develop HD games."

ForspokenFrey is slightly confuzzled by the merger it seems

What do you make of this whole situation? Are you surprised to see Luminous Productions dissolved into Square Enix? Do you believe Forspoken had any involvement in this decision? I guess Forspoken won't be making it onto our best PS5 games list after all. Sound off in the comments down below and let us know what you think!
