The Last of Us keeps clicking up the most popular PS5, PS4 games chart

By Kes Eylers-Stephenson,

The Last of Us is currently dominating the PS5 and PS4's most popular games chart for yet another week as the HBO show continues to fuel the games. God of War is dropping off now, along with Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order on PS Plus.

Here we go again! The popularity of The Last of Us series continues as the HBO show dominates TV, while last month's most popular PS Plus game finally slips away. All of them deserve a spot in the best PS4 games, making this an incredibly high-quality week of gaming for most players.

At the very top, where you can see Call of Duty, Fortnite, and GTA, things are very static right now. We imagine it won't be broken too heavily, though Hogwarts Legacy seems set to shuffle the big boys away from the top for a bit. So instead of our leading story this week, let's return to the interesting continued rise of The Last of Us. After Episode 4 of the HBO show, we are seeing engagement numbers for both games rise as audience size grows week-on-week. For the combined PS4 and PS5 versions of the first game that you see in the chart as Part 1, we have seen a rise by one place to 13th with a massive 21% rise in the week-on-week player count.

The Last of Us Part I is the PS5 version and individually it would place 45th — outside of the range of our chart. The Last of Us Remastered on PS4 would place at 19th if placed individually — a fantastic finish. The PS4 version has a player count advantage of 3:1 on PS5. Don't make the mistake of thinking that that means the PS5 version is performing poorly. That release is still being sold at a relatively high price, whereas the PS4 version is included in the PS Plus Essential Games Collection until June this year. The PS4 version is much more accessible, but Part 1 is shaping up well.

The Last of Us Part 3The Last of Us Part 3, when?

Our other mildly big story is that Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order has slipped away four places to 21st. Interestingly, it hasn't actually lost players. It has pretty much dead on the exact same player count as last week, it's just that the games that have overtaken it really went hard last week: Madden, Dead by Daylight, and Fall Guys. As a PS Plus game reaching the end of its time as part of the Essential monthly games, this is a fantastic performance.

Two small bits of news elsewhere — the first bit of is that Forspoken rests in 11th, up 16 places from last week. This massive increase is almost surprising given the tepid critical response. Since last week, it has had a 192% increase in player count, launching it up the chart into 11th. That is a massive haul of players it has managed to attract over the course of a week — especially for a PS5-only game.

Place that in contrast to Dead Space, which has slipped eight spots to 41st position. It's not looking great for the critically well-received remaster of the PS3 horror classic, but we think this might have legs. It's just not that it has been well received and will have a bit of word of mouth, it's that prices will fall and now everyone will want to pick it up at some point. A strange week for these two games, then!

That wraps up the analysis for the week. Here are the most popular PS5 and PS4 games for the week ending February 5th, 2023.
