Horizon Zero Dawn PS5 remake is “happening,” sources reconfirm

By Kes Eylers-Stephenson,

Horizon Zero Dawn is seemingly set for a PS5 remake or remaster of some kind, much like The Last of Us Part 1. One source has now reiterated that "it's happening" for the second time, though PlayStation Studios will keep it easy.

Horizon Zero Dawn is a wonderful PS4 game from PlayStation Studio Guerilla Games. However, despite having only been released in 2017, the exclusive Horizon Zero Dawn PS5 remake or remaster has been reiterated to be "happening" by Colin Moriarty. While it might be one of the best PS4 games, a re-release this early after launch might strike some as premature.

PlayStation exclusives are getting PS5 remakes constantly

Sony is ramping up efforts to re-release games and it looks like the Horizon Zero Dawn PS5 remake will be one of the next of these new-breed remakes on the docket. That sentiment has been reiterated for a second time by well-connected journalist-turned-pundit Colin Moriarty on his podcast Sacred Symbols (Episode 240) at around 52.40 (this can change based on adverts), just after his co-host Chris Ray-Gun states that he'd rather not see a Remake of the 2017 PS4 exclusive.

"I was told by someone who's been reliable in the past, and I reported this on the show when I was told it: it's happening. There is some sort of Horizon 1 thing happening, but who knows what nature of it is going to be. We'll find out," Moriarty finishes. This quote is the most bullish Moriarty has been about this game, though take it with a pinch of salt until officially unveiled.

Previously, Moriarty reported news about the Horizon Zero Dawn PS5 Remake developer, where he stated he wasn't keen on saying much as his source might get scared. There, he did state that the developer might not be the original team Guerrilla Games, but another group — our speculation is that it could be PC port studio Nixxes, remaster specialists Bluepoint, or newly acquired support studio Valkyrie. Sony has shown a propensity to work with smaller support teams, however.

It's a big year for the Horizon franchise after 2022 stepped up the mark with Horizon Forbidden West. Later this year we will be getting a new expansion for that called Burning Shores, and on February 22nd, 2023 we will be getting Horizon Call of the Mountain for PSVR 2. With a co-op game in development at Guerrilla Games from the franchise, as well as this PS5 remake and an apparent MMO RPG that is reportedly being developed by NCSoft — Horizon content will be non-stop.

Sony is obviously keen on synergy, so it seems likely that this PS5 remake might land with the TV Show in the works — just like The Last of Us Part 1 and the HBO show. What do you think of the news? Would you be happy of there was no issue with development from Guerrilla, so that team could work on something new? Let us know in the comments below!
