Microsoft grasses on Sony for being a big Activision deal meanie

By Kes Eylers-Stephenson,

Microsoft has issued a subpoena to Sony in the ongoing Activision Blizard deal. The Federal Trade Commission issued a lawsuit against Microsoft over the deal as it allegedly disadvantages PlayStation in the wider gaming market.

Microsoft's deal for Activision Blizzard is under investigation by regulators the world over, but it looks like America's Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is set to sue over the $69 billion dollar deal. To defend itself, Microsoft has issued Sony a PlayStation-related subpoena for information about the scope of Sony's production.

Sony you big 'ol meanie, let Microsoft do the big deal thing!!Sony you big 'ol meanie, let Microsoft do the big deal thing!

PlayStation's production is being requested by Xbox-owning rivals

Stephen Totilo of Axios initially found the documents that outline Microsoft's second attempt at a subpoena. A subpoena is a request to attend court. “Negotiations between SIE and Microsoft as to the scope of SIE’s production and a discovery schedule are ongoing,” says the document.

In this case, Microsoft is asking Sony to attend the trial so it can divulge "SIE's production" (internal PlayStation information) to the court. Microsoft believes that the order will help it argue it's the case for the Activision Blizzard deal. Sony has until January 27th, 2023 to respond to the subpoena and Microsoft has until April 7th, 2023 to build a defence. PlayStation has previously blocked an attempt, the documents reveal, probably just to ensure that it has absolute control over whatever Microsoft asks Sony to reveal in court on August 2nd, 2023.

During the trial, Microsoft needs to convince everyone the deal won't harm competitors, so it makes absolute sense that it would want to bring in its biggest competitor to prove its own point. Our headline here is obviously straight-up vibes, Microsoft is grassing on Sony in the same way any company would do in court, but we just think it's funny to see in our industry.

It is, isn't it? Tech giant Microsoft trying to argue Sony is being a big old meanie for 20 years of video game industry experience, 90% organic growth, and releasing quality products year after year to make PlayStation work. Meanwhile, big 'ol Microsoft wants to buy Xbox success using a record deal of a value incomparable to any financial level Sony operates on in order to catch up, despite already having more studios they seem incapable of getting content from. It's a bit funny to make these wildly simple and childlike reductions of a complex situation, man. Do you agree? Disagree venomously? Let us know in the comments!
