God of War Ragnarok slips away from top five popular PlayStation games

By Kes Eylers-Stephenson,

God of War Ragnarok is starting to slip away from the most popular PS5 and PS4 games this week as the traditional top five resumes form. Across the rest of the chart a new Dragon Ball game enters the chart, with a few big risers.

If you have already wrapped up those God of War Ragnarok trophies, you probably won't be surprised that one of 2022's most popular PS5 and PS4 games is slipping away — once you have finished the game, you've finished. That leaves the top five most popular PlayStation games open to live-service games like Call of Duty, Fortnite, and FIFA 23.

The top five are a mundane collection of the most talked about titles: Fortnite, Call of Duty, GTV V, FIFA 23, and Rocket League. Let's skip the chatter there and move straight down to God of War Ragnarok in sixth, one of the best PS5 games. Since the game debuted and scored a 9/10 in our God of War Ragnarok review 15 weeks ago, this is the lowest that the action game and PS5 exclusive has fallen. It's actually not that far behind the overtaking Rocket League, with only 3.9% less of a total player base. However, this does indicate that even the Christmas receivers are now wrapping up the game and its influence will start to wane.

The PS Plus monthly games for January 2023 are having a weak month compared to previous selections, but Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order holds the fort with a 13th place finish and a single place rise week-on-week. It looks like two-in-three players are playing on PS5, so that new-gen sheen is clearly drawing players in.

Fallout 76Fallout 76 is doing fine... totally fine

Meanwhile, fellow PS Plus game Fallout 76 has also risen a single place to 21st. In both the case of this title and Star Wars, the higher rank isn't the result of an increase in player count — both games have seen stagnant week-to-week numbers — but rather that other games around it have fallen. Dead by Daylight cleared the way for Fallout 76 and Destiny 2 did the same for Fallen Order, but it looks like both games have kept a hold of the players they captured during the PS Plus launch last week. Axiom Verge 2, however, has been obliterated since its 31st-place finish last week, landing off-chart at 54th place this week.

Dragon Ball Z Kakarot finishes in 29th, continuing the trend of anime games ending up selling incredibly well regardless of quality — the PS5 version went on sale last week, in case you didn't know. These games feel like the grey spot of the western video game industry, as they just release with no attention at all despite being some of the biggest sellers in any given year. Don't forget to note that Warframe is back in the chart at the bottom, in 38th. It bounces back and forth, in and out of the chart, but it's also immensely successful at retaining players.

That does it on analysis for the week. Did you guys notice anything you want to point out? Let us know in the comments! Here are the top 40 most popular PlayStation games for the week ending January 15th, 2023.
