The Last of Us gets new PS5 tease hinting at interconnected world

By Kes Eylers-Stephenson,

The Last of Us is getting multiplayer on PS5 at some point and now PlayStation Studio Naughty Dog has teased it with more concept art. However, one detail suggests that this might be a massive interconnected world map.

Since The Last of Us Part 1 didn't include Factions — an intense multiplayer mode with heinous The Last of Us Remastered trophies attached — it's been years since we have had any survival multiplayer in Naughty Dog's brutal world. More has been announced, however; Neil Druckmann has shared another teaser for The Last of Us multiplayer coming to PS5.

With the new image above in tow, Naughty Dog chief Niel Druckmann penned a blog post hinting at the new The Last of Us multiplayer entry that was revealed last year. "We’re so excited to share more with you about the future of this franchise," the post reads.

"We’ll have some fun surprises for you along the way, but later this year we will begin to offer you some details on our ambitious The Last of Us multiplayer game. With a team led by Vinit Agarwal, Joe Pettinati, and Anthony Newman, the project is shaping up to be a fresh, new experience from our studio, but one rooted in Naughty Dog’s passion for delivering incredible stories, characters, and gameplay."

While it's very fun that we should be getting a better look at this still mysterious game later this year, we think that the new image (the first embedded in the article) reveals something very interesting about the first teaser (the second embedded in the article). Note that the newest image is of a cargo ship and, if you look at the mid-left of the first image you can see a dock area in the distance. We are fairly certain this is no coincidence and hope that it hints at a highly interconnected storytelling space. While all the multiplayer maps could be separated into different stages, it seems to us that this indicates the map might be a massive Warzone 2-like extravaganza with interconnecting zones.

We know that it is set in San Fransico and will have a new story told in an unusual form. This might suggest that you unravel tales with each game you play across a huge map with interconnected zones. Our imaginations are probably going into overdrive a bit here, but the cargo ship connection can't be a fluke... can it?. Let us know what you think of the new image and if this new The Last of Us could make it onto our best online multiplayer games list. See you in the comments!
