PS Plus Extra loophole nets players a limited free PS5 upgrade

By Lee Brady,

PS Plus Extra is set to add the PS5 version of Mortal Shell to its game catalogue with the December 2022 update, finally offering PS Plus subscribers who own a copy of the PS4 version a loophole to access the game's PS5 upgrade.

The new PS Plus Extra and Premium games for December 2022 update has announced that Mortal Shell, which was a free monthly PS Plus game last year, will be joining the PS Plus Extra game catalogue. Aside from another opportunity to try for one of the hardest platinum trophies on PS Plus, it seems PS4 players with a PS Plus copy of Mortal Shell will finally be able to claim a free PS5 upgrade — albeit only temporarily.

Mortal Shell PS PlusThe Mortal Shell PS Plus collab continues.

Mortal Shell free PS5 upgrade loophole available for a limited time

While Mortal Shell offers a free PS5 upgrade to any player who purchased the game outright on PS4, anyone who claimed the PS4 version of Mortal Shell on PlayStation Plus was denied a PS5 upgrade — instead being offered to pay an upgrade fee of £24.99/$29.99. It's an issue unique to PlayStation as a platform, as a copy of a game on Xbox or Steam will not be segregated into separate purchases per console like this, and we're happy to see big PS Plus games like Final Fantasy VII Remake, What Remains of Edith Finch, and Outer Wilds all working to offer free PS5 upgrades to subscribers.

In fact, Mortal Shell is one of the few remaining hold-outs that hasn't offered a free PS5 upgrade to those who claimed a copy via PS Plus in 2021. Now with the soulslike hitting PS Plus Extra, however; subscribers who decided to pony up for the more expensive Extra or Premium tiers can finally tap into the PS5 version of Mortal Shell. Sure, it's not permanent — once Mortal Shell inevitably leaves PS Plus Extra, the loophole closes and you'll be left having to pony up for the upgrade once again. Still, for many PS Plus subscribers, it's much better than nothing.
