Sony boss Jim Ryan says the PS5 supply issues have been resolved

By Lee Brady,

Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Jim Ryan has confirmed that the PS5 supply issues that have plagued the latest PlayStation console since its 2020 launch have at last been resolved.

Sony boss Jim Ryan announced in a speech at the PlayStation Partner Awards that the PS5 stock issues seen since the console's 2020 launch would finally come to an end. The PS5 stock shortage already looked set to come to an end with news of 30 million PS5 consoles set to go into production in 2023. Now we have official confirmation from the Sony head himself, it looks like we can all more easily check out the best PS5 games that have cropped up in the last two years.

Sony announces end to PS5 stock issues

Ryan's announcement, translated by Genki on Twitter, states that Sony has "resolved the long-term supply issue of the PlayStation 5". It also contains an apology to the Japanese and Asian partners in the audience for the supply issues: "We apologize for any inconvenience and greatly appreciate your understanding and cooperation. Many fascinating titles were born in Japan and Asia in 2022, and I look forward to honouring them for their outstanding achievements today."

The supply issues certainly seem to affect Japan particularly hard, with the PS5 becoming Japan's slowest-selling PlayStation console of all time — even worse than the disastrous PlayStation Vita and similarly slow PlayStation 3. The PlayStation head had previously expressed exhaustion with scalpers who were exasperating the issue in these regions, though these PS5 scalper bots would eventually lose interest as stock became more frequently available throughout 2022.

It seems Nintendo's hint that PS5 stock issues were coming to an end was on the money after all.
