Site Feature: New game completion time estimate ranges

By Rich Stone,
When we first introduced game completion estimates some years ago, we created a set of time options that we thought would adequately allow for pretty much all the games on PlayStation.

However, as the number of super-quick completion games has grown, and a larger number of very time-consuming games have been released, we've been receiving more and more requests from the community to update the time estimate ranges. Today we start the process of addressing that.

New time estimate bands

Today we have introduced seven new time bands to the time estimates options (new options are in bold):

  • 0-0.5 hours
  • 0.5-1 hour
  • 1-2 hours
  • 2-3 hours
  • ...
  • 120-150 hours
  • 150-200 hours
  • 200-300 hours
  • 300-500 hours
  • 500-750 hours
  • 750-1,000 hours
  • 1,000+ hours
The new bands are replacing the 0-1 hour and 200+ hours time bands in the existing system.

The old time bands are being removed in four weeks

We thought long and hard whether we could somehow guess how to replace your existing estimates with the new bands, but in the end, we thought the best way was to ask you to change them yourself, as only you know how long it took you to complete each game or DLC pack.

We are going to wait four weeks before removing the old bands to give you plenty of time to update your estimates to the new system.

If you click here, you'll see a list of all the times you've set that are in the two bands that we are going to remove. You can update all your estimates from this one page. If you don't see any content listed here then you don't have any estimates to update.

The two bands that will be removed have "(old)" in the dropdown, so you can easily see which need to be updated. If you are setting estimates for content you've recently completed, you'll only see the new options.

Completion estimate charts

The Completion Estimate charts on the game and How Long to Beat pages will automatically move over to showing the new bands as soon as there are more new bands than old for that piece of content.

Once we reach March 3rd 2023, we will delete any estimates in the old bands completely, but before that we will PM anyone that still has old estimates to give them a final chance to update them.

Thank you

We really appreciate your help with this update, we tried to automate as much as we could, but unfortunately, we couldn't figure a way to automate the changes completely.
