The Callisto Protocol debuts on most popular PlayStation games chart

By Kes Eylers-Stephenson,

The Callisto Protocol makes its horrific debut in this week's top 20 most popular PlayStation games, while Call of Duty, Fortnite, and God of War Ragnarok duke it out at the top. Need for Speed Unbound also drifts into focus.

With everybody collecting The Callisto Protocol trophies, it's time to see where it debuted on the most popular PlayStation games list. Meanwhile, Need for Speed Unbound is revving up the engines, ready for an attempt at the best racing games on PlayStation.

The Callisto ProtocolThe Callisto Protocol scared of its debut.

Let's wait a moment on Callisto as we break down this meaty top three. God of War Ragnarok has dropped a place to third as Fortnite pushes from third to second, with Call of Duty Modern Warfare II claiming the chicken dinner. When we dive into the behind-the-scenes numbers, Ragnarok has a 17% decrease in total player count week on week. Meanwhile, Fortnite has had a 15% increase in the player count since last week, with MWII remaining at a steady pace at the top and well clear of the rest. Fortnite has had a big update for PS5 over the last week thus explaining its rise, and people will be wrapping up Ragnarok now, but expect it to rise again after people get it for Christmas.

Now, here comes Callisto's talk! Its first week sees the horror title debut in 17th, which isn't bad... but isn't quite as high as we thought it could be with the hype going into the launch. However, it has only been out for three days of the week that this chart counts for. Normally games like this find a second-week rise after a good week on the market, but with slightly mediocre reviews there is a concern that it might really struggle to gain momentum in its popularity. We are going to give it the benefit of the doubt this week and really dig into the numbers in next week's chart.

Need for Speed UnboundNeed for Speed Unbound

Need for Speed Unbound has been in EA's early access programme and has found its way to 37th. Criterion might have a real hit here once the game launches in full, though the UK sales charts aren't terribly promising for the arcade racer. Need for Speed Heat is just ahead of it, though — with all of those PS Plus players currently bedded into the earlier series entry, it's inclusion in Sony's subscription service might be perceived as a mistake if that trend continues. Just behind it is Gundam Evolution in 40th position — how and why? I don't know. I just don't know. Big robots, I guess.

That's all the analysis for you! Don't forget to leave a comment, and see you there! Here are the 40 most popular PlayStation games for the week ending December 4th, 2022.
