PlayStation Tournaments refresh kicks off with chance to win free PS5

By Lee Brady,

PlayStation Tournaments has finally launched on PS5 alongside a new event called the Win-A-Thon, which teases grand prizes like a free PS5 and a DualSense Edge for PS4 and PS5 players who take part.

Sony have finally launched the PS5 Tournaments feature after nearly a full year of teasing and firmware updates. Much like the PS4 version, PlayStation Tournaments lets PS5 players discover and sign-up for online competitions across various games, and from December 1st 2022 until January 31st 2023, players will even have the option to win fabulous prizes by taking part.

PlayStation Tournaments prizes include PS5 and cash prizes

Announced on the PlayStation Blog, both PS5 and PS4 players will be able to win prizes by taking part in the PlayStation Tournaments Win-A-Thon — though the rules and prizes differ depending on the console you're taking part on, so bear that in mind. To take home the top prizes, players will need to climb to the top of the leaderboard by winning the most matches in whichever titles are eligible.

PS4 players can win one of eight PS5s, plus cash prizes up to $500, by registering and then climbing either the Sports Games or Fighting Games tournament rankings (each tournament has four PS5s to give away). To climb the Sports Games tournament, PS4 players will need to win matches in either FIFA 22, FIFA 23, NBA 2K22, and NBA 2K23. To climb the Fighting Games tournament, players will need to win matches across a number of the best fighting games. Applicable games are: Tekken 7, Street Fighter V, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Mortal Kombat 11, Soul Calibur VI, and Under Night In-Birth Exe: Late[cl-r].

PS5 tournamentsThe Win-A-Thon promises some great prizes.

PS5 players will be competing for different prizes, with 36 DualSense Edge controllers, 33 Pulse 3D headsets, and a bunch of cash prizes up from grabs. PS5 players are restricted to competing over three titles: FIFA 23, NBA 2K23, and Guilty Gear -Strive-. For more details on which positions earn which prizes, make sure to read the rules on the PlayStation's website.

The PS5 version of PlayStation Tournaments will feature bracket caps to prevent tournaments from dragging on forever, more regular tournaments across more games, and the ability to register on the console itself — which is the kind of no-brainer addition we really like to see in a console feature refresh.
