Gungrave G.O.R.E review round-up

Gungrave G.O.R.E reviews are out in the wild and the verdict is a very average experience all around. The PS2-era representation hasn't done enough to wow the reviewers, but maybe it could impress you.

The Gungrave series launched back in 2002 onto PS2 consoles and impressed fans with its high-octane action and over-the-top gunplay. Gungrave G.O.R.E looks to capture the essence of this cult-classic series in an updated fashion — but did it manage to do so? Judging from the mixed reviews that Gungrave G.O.R.E has received it would appear as though the newest instalment in the franchise misses the mark. The game seems to provide players with an occasionally stylish third-person shooter that, unfortunately, feels stuck in trying to recapture the glory days of the PS2 era.

Tom West: "Gungrave G.O.R.E proves that keeping with a series' core elements, no matter how old, can be a positive weapon to use when bringing an older franchise back to the masses. Its arcade-style gameplay loops offer quick ten-minute bursts of explosive action that are thrilling to play out while challenging to master at higher difficulties or chasing top ranks. Iggymob has created a game that brings nostalgic PS2-era mechanics to the latest generation of consoles and Xbox Game Pass, and you should definitely check it out. Grave remains the badass hero we need in our lives."

Chris Carter: "Go into Gungrave Gore with an open mind, the mindset that you’re going to kick some ass in an old school action game, and maybe, after a sale. The reaction to this thing is going to be all over the place (even from action enthusiasts), but once everything started to fire on all cylinders, I was having a lot of fun: amid some technical concerns."

Scott McCrae: "If you're someone who heard 'a new Gungrave' and got excited, this is a game for you. For what it's worth, it nails that. It genuinely feels like a lost PS2 game, and that's the kind of thing we love. Although, the original game had the benefit of only being around two hours long, while G.O.R.E. clocks in at about 12. However, we can't in good faith recommend someone to spend £45 on this, outside of those with an affinity for the series."

IGN — 6/10

Will Borger: "When you get right down to it, most of Gungrave G.O.R.E feels like a missed opportunity. There’s a great combat system here, but the lack of variety and repetitive enemy design often let it down. The art, courtesy of Trigun’s Yasuhiro Nightow and Ikumi Nakamura, is fantastic and oozes style, but the story told in that attractive setting isn’t very interesting. The music and sound design are largely wonderful, too, but the voice acting is a little uneven. I can easily see its potential, but a mishmash of missteps prevent Gungrave G.O.R.E from ever reaching it."

Josh Tolentino: "Polish issues aside, Gungrave G.O.R.E. is a nostalgic trip to a certain era of action game design, dressed up in improved visuals and performance. Its anachronistic take on shooting gameplay and late-90s anime aesthetic won’t be for everyone, but the separation of years makes it clear that there’s nothing quite like it on the market."

Garri Bagdasarov: "Gungrave G.O.R.E. has been a long time coming; in many ways, this is the game fans of the franchise have been waiting for. It may not be the best game on the market regarding visual and audio design, but the gameplay makes up for that. What may seem like a repetitive shooter quickly becomes a frantic and strategic battle against hordes of enemies. Gungrave G.O.R.E. is a brutal game, but I would be amiss to admit that I loved almost every minute of my time with it. It's not for everybody, but those who take the time to appreciate its mechanics may find something special in this latest franchise entry."

Henry Yu: "I played Gungrave G.O.R.E with zero knowledge of the franchise, and I reckon that is for the better. I would be infinitely more disappointed going into this game as a diehard fan of the series and seeing what a disservice G.O.R.E does to the Gungrave name. It’s astonishing to see Iggymob charging $50 for a low-budget, niche game riddled with unoriginal gameplay, multiple soft-locks, atrocious level design, and laughable voice acting."
