PS Plus random JRPG delisting fixed after backend issue

By Kes Eylers-Stephenson,

Sony's PS Plus revamp has had a major issue since its relaunch: woeful communication. After being randomly delisted from Extra, JRPG Ys VIII Lacrimosa of Dana is back on the service after some backend issues.

Update: Ys VIII Lacrimosa of Dana is back on the PlayStation Plus Extra games list having been randomly delisted from the service. Push Square have a final statement from publisher NIS America that explained the issue a little. The company states that there were "some issues on the backend" which have been solved and "the game has been restored and is once again available on PS Plus." No technical reasons were given, but the chances that PlayStation's messy PS4 and PS5 SKU system might have played a role.

Original Story: PS Plus Extra has randomly had a JRPG delisted without any warning or notice on the games leaving soon list. Even odder, the publisher of Ys VIII Lacrimosa of Dana, NIS America, claims that the highly rated PS4 version was removed wrongfully from PS Plus Extra.

Ys VIII Lacrimosa of Dana delisted from PS Plus Extra

The PS5 version of Ys VIII Lacrimosa of Dana with trophies released last week, making something odd happen to its 2016 PS4 counterpart, a game that has been listed on the revamped PS Plus service since it launched in June 2022. Without warning, the JRPG — check out our best JRPG list, by the way — was removed from the Extra tier. Recently, Sony started updating the PS Plus expiry dates that were not working for a while — but Ys VIII had not been listed there.

Publisher NIS America has now spoken to Push Square (who first reported the news) about the issue. "Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana not appearing PS Plus Extra was not planned and we are currently looking into the details. We would not remove any titles from any platform without prior communication through our channels."

Even if this is all a technical mistake and not a communication issue, it's telling that we can't tell the difference at this point. Sony has been dire at telling fans or press what is going on with its subscription service, even when it comes down to the basic monthly game reveals. Premium sometimes doesn't get any new games and is starting to feel like a scam, especially when a game series like Kingdom Hearts feels mislabelled under the current tiering system. This could all be remedied with a bit more care from Sony, but right now 'care' seems in short supply from the Japanese company.

With PS Plus discounts for Black Friday live and likely to draw in more subscribers, we feel it needs to be stated that the subscription service does have significant problems and that customers should be wary of issues like this. It's not a bad service, just it is irritatingly rough around the edges and not in an endearing way. Check out the best PS Plus games, it's full of amazing titles. What are your thoughts on this?
