Best games in the Black Friday PlayStation sale

By Kes Eylers-Stephenson,

The PS Store has a new sale for Black Friday that is packed with PS5 and PS4 games of the highest class as well as deals on PS Plus. With Christmas approaching, the team handpicks a few of the best games at massive discounts.

The Black Friday sale is now live on the PlayStation Store with plenty of discounts and bargains ahead of the holiday season. From the European and North American sales, we have picked out four games that we think are worth picking up in the offerings. If you are interested, PS Plus is also discounted right now.

Kes — Red Dead Redemption II

What can I say here that you don't already know and that I didn’t already talk about in our best PS4 games list? Red Dead Redemption II is a game that literally could only be made by a studio with the time, patience, talent, and absurd funding of Rockstar. Perhaps the most obvious marker of how stupendous of an achievement it is, is how much worse other games became after playing it. In my Horizon Forbidden West review, it's pretty clear I think it’s the best open-world of this year (excluding Elden Ring), and yet I would argue that even that elite PlayStation Studios title is basically a rabid prairie dog that gets picked off with remarkable accuracy by this Wild West masterclass. For £18.14 on sale, hire this Hitman and slay the other open-world games by spending all your time with Arthur Morgan and co in an emotionally charged and vividly grandiose adventure that will knock your boots off.

The Last of Us Part 2!

Lee — The Last of Us Part II

While writing The Last of Us Part 1 review, I was very careful not to bring The Last of Us Part II into the equation — other than to bat people over the head with a newspaper for presuming Part I was inherently worth less as a remake because it lacked the mechanical additions introduced in Part I, like being able to go prone. While Part II is a game born from Part I’s mechanics, and thus must be evaluated in relation to the original The Last of Us, Part I was simply a remake of the original — it would be like saying GTA III is rubbish because GTA V has great heists.

That said, is The Last of Us Part II any good? Yes, obviously. Of course it is. Plus, in the Black Friday sale, you can pick it up for less than £9, or just $9.99 USD. It’s a weirder, darker, messier game than The Last of Us Part I, but its genius shines through in how it shoots for the action gaming throne dominated by titles like Metal Gear Solid rather than in how expertly controlled and Metroid-like the original’s design was. If you’ve had your doubts and have been waiting this long to dive in on Part II, you really owe it to yourself — especially now that you can back-to-back them on PS5 like a double feature with maddeningly consistent graphics.

Kes

Kes — Sackboy A Big Adventure

Lee recommended this to us all in his best co-op games list, so I’m going to be picking it up myself this sale. The yarny hero finally gets his name on the tin in Sackboy A Big Adventure — a platformer that might not be the best in class, but will be a great time with a partner or family member. After the Little Big Planet series was sadly left in the dust for Dreams by Media Molecule, it’s felt like Sony missed a trick with the franchise. With this entry though, it looks like Sackboy briefly found fresh feet on fresh cotton (or whatever other material this little fool presses his unsturdy limbs into). So, I’m excited to start jumping around the gaff to refind the British charm that made the series so popular during the PS3 era — let’s see if it delivers. For £25.19, it’s lowest ever price, it seems well worth the time.

AI The Somnium Files

Sean — AI: The Somnium Files nirvanA Initiative

A: The Smnium Files nirvanA Initiative comes from legendary developers and publishers Spike Chunsoft, a studio that is best known for the incredible Danganronpa series. You can currently grab the game for £6.99 in the sale, which is a huge saving from its original £34.99 price tag — just be careful, as there appear to be two versions, one of which is not as reduced as this one. In this sci-fi, thriller, murder-mystery game, you play as detective Kaname Date who is hunting down a mysterious serial killer that is on the loose. You will explore a variety of grim crime scenes, as well as people's dreams, to help find clues and uncover who is committing these heinous crimes.

AI: The Somnium Files comes from the mind of Kotaro Uchikoshi, who is best known for the acclaimed Zero Escape series. While the game can be goofy and over-the-top — something we love in our anime games — you will witness some truly disturbing and uncomfortable situations as you progress through the game, which helps keep you grounded and aware of how demonic the serial killer you are tracking is.

One extra shoutout to is the AI The Somnium Files nirvanA Initiative trophies which are pretty straightforward and easy to earn. You shouldn’t have to much trouble snatching the trophy ‘nirvanA Initiative’ — which has a completion rate of 17.2% on PSN — and adding another excellent platinum to your trophy accolades. It seems most trophies are earned by naturally progressing through the story and completing various different routes.

That wraps it up for our selection of games from the sale. It's obviously a massive offering, so make sure you let us know what you are going to pick in the comments!
