FromSoftware could be its own publisher after insane Elden Ring sales By Sean Lawson, 07 Nov 2022 FollowtopicsElden RingBandai Namco EntertainmentPlayStation 5Sean Lawson Elden Ring has been an absolute smash hit for developer FromSoftware and publisher Bandai Namco, and recent sales figures show off just how successful the open-world action RPG has been — FromSoft has plans to become a publisher.FromSoftware is looking to become its own publisher, no longer requiring the likes of Bandai Namco and Sony to help get its games out into the world. Detailed in a recent report, FromSoft's plans to become its very own publisher could have something to do with the insane sales figures Elden Ring has accumulated since its release back in February 2022. FromSoftware is looking to go solo a new report suggests!FromSoftware to start publishing games after insane Elden Ring salesA financial report from Kadakowa (posted onto Twitter by Elden Ring YouTuber Ziostorm1) confirms FromSoftware's publisher plans and analyses the success of Elden Ring through the staggeringly impressive sale figures that it has generated. While by no means is Elden Ring's success the deciding factor in FromSoft looking to become a publisher itself, the likelihood that it was a contributing factor wouldn't be a massive surprise to discover. FromSoftware becoming its own publisher would allow the studio to take more risks when developing its own games, incorporating gameplay mechanics that publishers may have vetoed previously or allowing them to try out new genres and styles. While this is all exciting for the studio, becoming its own publisher also brings more risk and responsibility through the development process, as we're sure FromSoft are aware. If something were to go wrong or not be as successful as anticipated, this could have devastating consequences for the studio. That said, given the string of recent success FromSoft have seen, we're sure it will be absolutely fine.Something to keep in mind is that Bloodborne, Demon's Souls, the Dark Souls series, Sekiro Shadows Die Twice, and Elden Ring are all part-owned by the publishers who — well — published these games. This means that if FromSoft wanted to create a sequel or a remake for any of these titles, the previous publishers would also have to be involved and greenlight any decisions that FromSoft wanted to make in regard to these projects. FromSoftware becoming its own publisher also means it will no longer have to split so much of its profits with other parties going forward, meaning if the studio sees a success just like Elden Ring, every penny, cent, and dime will go straight into its pocket. FromSoft fans can all agree that the studio becoming independent could be a fantastic step forward, the independence of which might prove invaluable to the development cycle of its next big project — whatever that may be.Elden Ring sales are absolutely staggering to look at.What do you make of this situation then?
