Most Popular PlayStation Games — October 24th, 2022

By Kes Eylers-Stephenson,

This week sees Call of Duty Modern Warfare II coming into the charts in an AC130 to obliterate the competition, while Gotham Knights swings to a lowly position. The most popular PlayStation games are a wild ride!

With Call of Duty Modern Warfare II and Gotham Knights arriving in the most popular PlayStation games for this week, let's have a look at how they have performed against the stout competition. Meanwhile, we will take a look at some PS Plus Essential games drop-offs as Cyberpunk 2077 falls away.

It's impossible not to kick off with a bit of the Call of Duty series action happening between Modern Warfare and its sequel that's in early release. With only the campaign out, MWII has reached sixth place with just a campaign, one place behind the Warzone and multiplayer-toting Modern Warfare, one of the best FPS games on PlayStation. The difference between the two player counts? 5% — not bad at all. Interestingly, the ratio of PS5 to PS4 players is 4:1 which marks another comprehensive suggestion the PS4's influence is fading.

Gotham Knights had had a trickier time on its first week after some fairly mediocre reviews. Without the Batman series namesake to keep it buoyed, the game has glided into a 27th-place finish without much in the way of momentum for the coming weeks. For more on the game, take a look at Luke's Gotham Knights review on TA, where he said: "Combat is decent once it opens up, and traversal and the overarching gameplay loop are both great, but it's a shame that Gotham Knights' performance leaves a lot to be desired."

PlayStation Plus Essential has been let down by its highest performer for October, Hot Wheels Unleashed, which lands in 15th after soaring to ninth last week. It's not been a bad three weeks mind, so it deserves a bit of credit in the face of Need for Speed Heat from last month (which is still hanging around at 21st). The real big PS Plus winner this week is Grand Theft Auto: Vice City – The Definitive Edition which is debuting at 14th after launching on PS Plus Extra this month. Name recognition alone has power, even if the Definitive Editions aren't quite up to snuff.

Finally, we are seeing the Cyberpunk 2077 peak drop away as it falls to 20th from 14th. The impressive re-rises of Cyberpunk after anime Edgerunner are no joke and it looks like CD Projekt is regaining trust ahead of its plans for The Witcher's new games. Our final chart entrant is The Sims 4 which had a free-to-play weekend recently.

That does it for our assessment of this week's games! Did anything stick out? Take a look at the gameplay chart and decide for yourself. Here are the most popular games on PlayStation for the week ending October 23rd, 2022.
