Resident Evil 4 on PS4 will come with free PS5 upgrade at launch

By Lee Brady,

The Resident Evil 4 remake will be launching on PS5 and PS4 next year, and it was revealed at Capcom's Resident Evil Showcase that PS4 players choosing to pick up the game at launch won't come to regret it when they move to PS5.

Resident Evil 4 received a new cinematic trailer and an extended gameplay trailer at Capcom's Resident Evil Showcase this week, as well as a confirmed PS5 and PS4 release date of March 24th, 2023. One detail that might have passed eager PlayStation players by is that the Resident Evil 4 remake will let players upgrade from PS4 to PS5 for free at launch next year — a pro-consumer move that is by no means a given with big releases.

Resident Evil 4 release date and PS5 upgrade scheme revealed

As well as our closest look at the Resident Evil 4 remake thus far, we also saw a series of trailers at Capcom's Resident Evil Showcase for Resident Evil Village Gold Edition, which bundles together the Resident Evil Village DLC, Shadow of Rose, and the Resident Evil RE:Verse multiplayer mode. Between the Winters' Expansion DLC trophies and those Resident Evil RE:Verse trophies, that should keep Resident Evil trophy junkies occupied until RE4 comes out in March.

Resident Evil Showcase announcements for PlayStation
  • Resident Evil Village Gold (PS4, PS5) — includes Shadow of Rose DLC and a new third-person mode, plus bonus DLC; release date reconfirmed for October 28th, 2022.
  • Resident Evil RE:Verse (PS4, PS5) — confirmed to launch alongside Resident Evil Village Gold, will be available to all Resident Evil Village owners for free with online multiplayer crossplay. RE Village owners can play early access on PS4 from October 24th, 2022.
  • Resident Evil 4 (PS4, PS5) — PS4 players can upgrade to PS5 for free, gameplay and story trailers released, game will launch on March 24th, 2023.
Frankly, we're still just thrilled PS4 players won't be left in the dust this time around with Resident Evil 4, as it's by no means a sure thing with new releases. One massive slight not particularly covered in all those Persona 5 Royal PS5 reviews is how the PS5 remaster refused to offer PS4 players an opportunity to upgrade to the upgraded version. Sony's controversial decision to force PS4 customers to pay for a Horizon Forbidden West PS5 upgrade was backtracked after significant backlash online.

We saw What Remains of Edith Finch and Final Fantasy 7 Remake cause headaches with PS Plus players when they both initially barred PS4 players from a free PS5 upgrade — with those headaches still ongoing in the case of Mortal Shell. That's why, upon seeing big titles like Resident Evil 4 offering a free upgrade for customers, we celebrate it as a somewhat tragic surprise. Let us know in the comments if you're pumped for the RE4 remake, and which console you plan to pick this up for.
