All but one mainline Assassin’s Creed game will be playable on PS Plus

By Lee Brady,

The entire mainline Assassin's Creed series will be playable on PS Plus this month except for one game — the original Assassin's Creed, which has remained missing in action since its debut release on the PS3.

With Assassin's Creed Syndicate, Assassin's Creed Chronicles Trilogy, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, and Assassin's Creed III Remastered joining PS Plus this month as part of the new PS Plus Extra and Premium Games for October 2022, it's abundantly clear that PS Plus has become the home of the Assassin's Creed franchise. There's only one mainline game eluding the PS Plus Extra collection — the original Assassin's Creed.

Assassin's Creed franchise comes to PS Plus this month

As PS5 players excitedly await the upcoming Assassin's Creed Mirage and its follow-up titles via Assassin's Creed Infinity, it's great news that we can all delve into the Assassin's Creed series backlog and check out some of the older titles — perhaps also availing of our Assassin's Creed series rankings to figure out which ones to skip.

However, fans might wonder where one, or two, missing puzzle pieces to this series have disappeared to, as the original Assassin's Creed has, unlike the rest of the older games, not made the leap to either PS4, PS5, or PS Plus. Players might also wonder what became of Aveline de Grandpré PS Vita-turned-PS4 adventure, Assassin's Creed III Liberation, as it has also not explicitly been named as one of the upcoming PS Plus titles.

Well, many might know this already, but good news on the Liberation front — Aveline's adventure was quietly remastered alongside Assassin's Creed III and included in that game's release. Players simply need to download Assassin's Creed III Remastered on PS Plus to access the title. Yet that doesn't explain the original Assassin's Creed's absence — why hasn't it joined Sony's subscription service?

In truth, we're not entirely sure — rumours abound for a time that Assassin's Creed 1 was getting a remake, although these were recently shot down by Assassin's Creed Mirage's art director Jean-Luc Sala in an interview with Eurogamer: "Yeah that's not what we're doing. I'm fully dedicated to Mirage and I can tell you we are not remaking AC1."

AC1 PS PlusVitally missing the part where we actually have any idea what's happening in the early series.

That means the game is still trapped as a PS3 title — and one without trophies at that — but surely one would imagine that could still be a contender for PS Plus Premium's classic catalogue? Unfortunately, it's radio silence from Ubisoft — the last that anyone's heard from the title was a backwards-compatible upgrade for the Xbox 360 version on the Xbox One X — yet the game has never been on Xbox Game Pass, either.

It's a shame, as that leaves a very pivotal entry the series' history absent from its new PS Plus home. Perhaps, in time, we'll at least see a cloud streaming edition for PS Plus Premium — until then, we'll have to imagine the game's new PS Plus look in our minds and focus on other mysteries, like the secrets hidden in Assassin's Creed Hexe's trailer. Let us know in the comments your best theories as to why the original Assassin's Creed hasn't joined its family in the PS Plus clubhouse.
