Most Popular PlayStation Games — September 25th, 2022

By Kes Eylers-Stephenson,

PlayStation Plus Extra has given rise to the FPS Deathloop, some Dragon Ball fun, and an Assassin's Creed game this week. Meanwhile, Essential games are dropping away along with TLOU, while Cyberpunk 2077 continues its rise.

The PS Plus Extra and Premium games for September 2022 have gone down a treat, while the Essential monthly games lineup has really dropped off. Meanwhile, Cyberpunk 2077 continues its redemption tour.

There is a triple-header of PlayStation Plus Extra games here. Let's start with Deathloop in 14th. This is a big re-entrance for the game, having first debuted on September 20th, 2021 in 28th position before increasing to 12th the following week (week ending September 27th, 2022). While that would be its high point — it's worth noting that was only a year into the PS5 lifetime and console sales were restricted. If we compare its 15th place finish with its high-point of 12th, there is a 5% difference between player counts in favour of its launch week. However, consider that for a second: PS Plus has managed to boost a PS5 exclusive nearly as much as the launch of a highly anticipated former PS5 exclusive — that tells us a lot of people are paying attention to PS Plus games.

Let's move on to our other two performers for PS Plus Extra, one of which may have a shot at our best PS Plus games list. Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 enters at 31st. It's not massive, no; but it is a result that I'm sure the developers will be happy with given the calibre of games coming into the service this month. The third game is Assassin's Creed Origins at 37th. We weren't tracking data when it first came to PS4, so normally this would be a re-entry rather than a first entrance. Again, a great game buoyed by interest from Extra and Premium — maybe a few read our praise for it in our Assassin's Creed games ranked article?

Cyberpunk 2077Cyberpunk 2077 continues flying high

We noted this last week, but the Cyberpunk 2077 trophies are being pinged regularly as more people jump into the open-world RPG thanks to the Edgerunners anime — a spectacular watch, by the way. It rises to ninth from 15th, increasing the player count by 46% week-on-week. Meanwhile, The Last of Us Part 1 is slipping away, dropping from 12th to 16th. Its total player count has decreased by 24%, meaning nearly one in four people have put the game down in one week.

Some of the Essential games have really taken a hit — though not unexpectedly so, mind. Need for Speed Heat is down two places to 11th, which is actually spectacular. That makes it one of the best PS Plus performers ever, so let's see if it can keep it up even if it isn't one of the best racing games on PlayStation. Then we have Toem hovering at 39th, up one place from last week, but not exactly fairing well. Finally, Granblue Fantasy Versus is at 52nd place this week — not even making the chart after a 32nd finish last week!

That's your lot on the analysis — let us know what you think in the comments! Here are the top 40 most popular PlayStation games for the week ending September 25th, 2022.
