The Sims 4 is now free on PS4 and PS5, and so is its platinum trophy

By Lee Brady,

The Sims 4 is now free to own, letting PS5 and PS4 players grab its platinum trophy without spending any money. While the Sims 4 base game will be free-to-own, its many DLC expansions will still be sold as usual.

Update: The Sims 4 base game is now officially free-to-own on PS5 and PS4, so players can jump in and start earning the game's trophies free of charge. EA kicked off the Sims 4's new price model during the previously announced Sims Summit, which also saw the reveal of new mode updates, and an early glimpse at a next-gen Sims project that may or may not one day be called The Sims 5.

For tips on how to earn the game's Ultimate Sim Guru platinum trophy, check out the original story below. Also, let us know in the comments whether this price update will mark your first foray into The Sims 4.

Original Story: The Sims 4 is going free-to-own on PS5 and PS4 from 18th October, 2022 — which means players can earn The Sims 4 trophies without spending a single red cent. EA and Maxis will still be supporting the game with regular DLC expansions, but since none of those expansions include additional trophies, PS5 and PS4 players can grab all the Sims 4 trophies and its platinum for free next month.

Sims"...and I didn't pay a dime!"

The Sims 4 platinum trophy will be free-to-earn in October 2022

EA announced that The Sims 4 would be going free on PlayStation consoles on its website, ahead of this year's Sims Summit — or annual Sims-related news fest, for those uninitiated. Aside from letting us know the game's platinum trophy was going free-to-earn, the article also informs previous The Sims 4 owners how to earn a free content pack to compensate them for having purchased the game in the past.

Looking at The Sims 4 platinum trophy, Ultimate Sim Guru, we can see only 20% of TT players and 0.2% of PSN players have claimed this one — meaning it's not going to be the easiest platinum to grab. Causing the most headaches are the game's hidden trophies which, if you'll permit me to spoil the achievements of an eight-year-old game that doesn't have a plot, I'll write some insight into these in the paragraph below. So — spoiler warning for any die-hard trophy heads out there.
The most time-intensive Sims 4 trophy is also a hidden gold: Alphabet Legacy. You'll need to play a household for over 26 generations to earn this one, which is quite a time sink (unless you follow DaveKinetic's trophy guide, of course). However, most of the lesser-earned trophies are just for strange deeds, like Black Widow, which asks you to have one Sim outlive five spouses — the strategy for which involves woohoo-induced heart attacks, which is as hilarious as it is accurate dark.

There's also Ghostly and Ghost Family, which ask you to invite one ghost, and then eight ghosts, into your household, respectively. What's exceedingly funny to me is that thousands more players have earned What Would it Be Like? — a trophy for woohooing a ghost — than any trophy that involves welcoming a ghost into the family. Surely most of the dead characters are deceased loved ones, right? Actually, let's shut this thread down now.

SimsThese... these aren't the ghosts, are they?

Should The Sims 4 ever come to PS Plus with some extra DLC content, you can bet it'll wind up on our hardest PS Plus platinum trophies list in a heartbeat. Until then, enjoy your free trophy list, let us know in the comments if you're going to tackle this one next month, and like we always see here at TrueTrophies: don't let those PlayStation Stars collectables lure you away from future free stuff.
