New God Of War Ragnarok footage showcases the highly anticipated PS5 and PS4 game's new weapon mechanics. Players will be able to take advantage of the elements and unleash stylish attacks to best their foes.
Update:
We now have new gameplay footage, showing off God of War Ragnarok's new Weapon Signature Moves, and they look absolutely spectacular. Getting to add a burst of flame or ice to your Leviathan Axe or Blades of Chaos looks like a seamless addition to Kratos' arsenal, and is absolutely one of those small combat additions that is sure to make revisiting 2018's God of War just that little bit less fulfilling — on second thought, why do we want new stuff again?
We also get to see a few new moves, like getting to use the Blades of Chaos to quickly thwip your way, Marvel's Spider-Man style, across the battlefield as you pursue your foes. This game just continues to get us pumped — let us know if you're feeling it in the comments below!
Original Story:
God of War Ragnarok is barreling toward us with a new weapon mechanic — now when you press the triangle button Kratos can imbue his Leviathan Axe and other weapons with fire and ice elements. The mechanic is called Weapon Signature Moves and will allow you to devastate your foes in a sea of carnage and over-the-top action when it arrives on PS5 and PS4 consoles.
God of War Ragnarok is coming straight at us!
God of War Ragnarok is about ready to release on PS5 and PS4
As reported by GameInformer, this new mechanic makes use of the triangle button, something that wasn't really utilised in the original God of War game. Previously, the button would recall your axe if you had thrown it, or it would swap your Blades of Chaos for your axe — but that was all.
In the issue from GameInformer, lead combat designers Mihir Sheth and Denny Yeh discussed their decisions behind incorporating this new mechanic and how the overall idea came to be, with Sheth saying: “If you pressed triangle, you recalled the axe, but if you already had the axe, nothing happened. If you had the Blades of Chaos and you pressed triangle, you just went back to the axe. We looked at that concept and wondered, ‘What if you could do something a little bit different with that button — a whole new suite of moves.’”
Time to do some demolishing
These new elemental moves called 'Frost Awaken' and 'Whiplash,' do extra damage by freezing or incinerating anyone who dares stand against you. While this alone is exciting, there are also two new shields called 'Dauntless' and 'Stonewall,' both of which come with their own unique capabilities. The Dauntless Shield rewards players who parry at the last possible second, causing the shield to glow an intimidating red, informing players they can now unleash a powerful attack that topples and stuns their enemies.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, the Stonewall Shield is for all you tank-lovers out there. Kratos is unable to parry when using this shield, but you will be able to block all incoming attacks — unless the enemy is able to break through your defences. The more damage Stonewall Shield takes, the more power it absorbs, and once it’s fully charged, players can slam the shield into the ground, emitting a pulse that knocks any enemies around you to their knees.
Are you excited to see Kratos annihilate his foes?
