Embracer Group claims the last line of defence for PS Vita games

By Sean Lawson,

Embracer Group has snatched up several more companies including Middle-earth Enterprises and the one-time last line of defence for physical PS Vita games, Limited Run Games. Embracer Group has truly become the Thanos of studios.

Embracer Group is acquiring game studios left, right, and centre at this point, adding to the already enormous roster of studios under its belt. Embracer has acquired a selection of new studios including Limited Run Games, who were one of the final studios keeping physical PS Vita games alive. As well as companies like Middle-earth Enterprises and Singtrix. We know the company snagged Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montréal, and Square Enix Montréal after Square Enix sold the studios to Embracer in a $300 million deal. All we can do is wonder who Embracer Group has its sights on next.

Embracer Group acquires Limited Run Games, Middle-earth Enterprises, and many more

It appears that Embracer Group plans to make Limited Run Games grow and expand around the world, making it bigger than it is now. To do this it seems Embracer has some plans behind the scenes to make use of other companies in its possession to help bring this plan to fruition. Neither party has disclosed specific terms due to "commercial reasons."

Lars Wingefors, the CEO of Embracer Group had this to say about LRG: ”As an avid collector, I’ve admired Limited Run’s collectors’ editions. They’ve built a strong brand that resonates with players. We see opportunities for Limited Run to further grow their business with the Carbon Engine by bringing back classic games, and extend their footprint geographically through synergies with other companies within Embracer Group."

Limited Run Games have been at the forefront of keeping the PS Vita alive, way past when Sony stopped supporting this incredible little handheld. There was an insane amount of amazing PS Vita games on the system — we even created a list of the best PS Vita games. It was great having a studio like LRG keeping the system alive for a little longer, but, sadly, all things must come to an end and LRG has ceased selling PS Vita titles on its website. The company still releases PS4 and PS5 physical copies of games you can't get physically anywhere else.

It isn't only Limited Run Games that Embracer has added to its portfolio, there are several more companies joining the evergrowing ranks of Embracer Group including a newly established operative group called Embracer Freemode. Middle-earth Enterprises, Tripwire Interactive, Tuxedo Labs, Tatsujin, Bitwave Games, Gioteck, and Singtrix have all joined Embracer Group.

What do you make of all these acquisitions from Embracer Group? Do you think Limited Run Games is in good hands? Let me know in the comments below!
