Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 co-op multiplayer mode potentially leaked

By Lee Brady,

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 may have leaked its multiplayer co-op mode, according to strings of code datamined from the recent Spider-Man release on PC.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2's co-op multiplayer would allow two players to take control of a Spider-Man each — one player assuming the role of Peter Parker from Insomniac Games' first Spider-Man title, while the other player cuts loose as Miles Morales from the PS Plus-dominating follow-up. This is all according to lines of code datamined from PlayStation Studio Nixxes' PC port of Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered suggesting Marvel's Spider-Man 2 may feature a multiplayer co-op mode.

The potential leak comes via modder Dniwetamp on Twitter, who posted some suspicious strings found in the PC port of Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered that openly references a "co-op" mode and seems to suggest a scoring system that ranks the best performing player as the "Superior Spider-Man" — a title we guess would incentivise co-operative competition like the crown from Super Mario 3D World.

In the same thread, we can also see that the game references a playable model for Miles Morales (who was not a playable character in the original Spider-Man PS4 title) and actively refers to a 'Character 1' and a 'Character 2.' As some users have pointed out, this might all refer to content that was cut from Marvel's Spider-Man, or even Spider-Man Miles Morales as it rushed to make the PS5 launch window.
However, as we learned from the recent Big the Cat leak for Sonic Frontiers, it's absolutely possible for two completely different in-development games utilising the same engine to contain data and information about the other game. In the case of Sonic Frontiers the leak actually came from Sonic Origins, both of which have been developed using Sonic Team's Hedgehog Engine. In this case, it makes perfect sense that Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and the port of Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered are both using Insomniac's proprietary Insomniac Engine.

We haven't heard many Spider-Man 2 details since its first trailer dropped at the PlayStation Showcase 2021, but the game's initial teaser trailer did feature both of Insomniac's Spider-Men readying to face off against Venom. So, a multiplayer co-op mode for the game doesn't sound too far-fetched. Let us know in the comments what your thoughts are on this supposed leak and whether you'd be excited about a Spider-Man 2 multiplayer campaign.
