PS5 revival of cult classic Sega PS2 game leaks release date

By Lee Brady,

The PS5 revival of cult classic PS2 game series Gungrave, originally published in North America by Sega, may have just had its release date leaked. The latest Koch Media published entry might be heading to PS5 and PS4 this year.

PS5 and PS4 players may not remember the Sega-published PS2 cult classic Gungrave or its Mastiff Games-published sequel, but long-term fans of the games (and its anime spin-off) will be thrilled to learn the series is returning with a third entry, Gungrave G.O.R.E. Now we have an idea when this PS5 revival of a Sega PS2 cult classic's release date may be, thanks to a recent leak.

Gungrave G.O.R.E. release date leaked for late 2022

sega ps5 revivalFeel that anime edge.

We learned via a leak spotted over on Reddit that Gungrave G.O.R.E. has a release date of November 3rd, 2022 pencilled in on GameFly.com. GameFly has since updated the date to the standard default date of December 31st, 2022 — a date we can guarantee Gungrave G.O.R.E., and indeed most games, will not be coming out on.

For those who have never checked out this once-Sega-published series, Gungrave on PS2 plays a little like a blend between Devil May Cry and a classic beat 'em up title like Streets of Rage. As 'Beyond the Grave' — yes, that's the insane full name of the main character, though everyone just calls him 'Grave' — you wordlessly shoot your way through waves of enemies to progress through each level, occasionally using the hilarious coffin Grave carries around with him to melee. Critics at the time were not too impressed by Gungrave or its sequel, though the series does have its following thanks in large part to the OTT character designs by Trigun creator Yasuhiro Nightow.
Gungrave G.O.R.E.'s latest trailer looks remarkably on-brand, which will excite fans and probably wash right over anyone not already on board with the series, but we're excited to see the game possibly come to PS5 and PS4 this year, at least. If this Sega-themed leak did nothing for you, perhaps Big the Cat in Sonic Frontiers is more your speed? Let us know if you're team Grave or team Big the Cat in the comments below.
