Skull & Bones has "a lot of gameplay on land" for a pirate game

Skull and Bones might be a pirate game with plenty of action on the high seas, but there will be "a lot of gameplay on land" according to game director Ryan Bernard. The PS5 game is releasing on November 8th, 2022.

Skull and Bones is Ubisoft's latest voyage into the world of Golden Age piracy after its success with Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag. The game director recently revealed that Skull and Bones is a pirate game with "a lot of gameplay on land."

Skull and Bones gameplay will use sea and land as two separate experiences

Speaking with our sister website TrueAchievements, game director Ryan Bernard started illustrating the map of the high seas that this pirate-themed live-service title will sail upon after showing the release date trailer not so long ago. What we didn't expect was how distinguished the link between gameplay sections was and just how important the role of land would be.

"Skull and Bones as, you know, is mainly a naval game. I think we've been really clear about that," said Bernard. "But there are many different outposts to discover as a player. They all have encampments, sometimes multiple encampments even, which rotate through a system we have."

"So, for instance, there might be a certain faction one day and the next day be you know, rogue pirates instead," Bernard says. "This was part of how we wanted to ensure that the world changes and feel alive. And as you mentioned, treasure hunts are one of the things that will only occur at an outpost when you finally discovered the location of that hidden treasure. Aside from that, there is a lot of gameplay on land – it’s where you craft, gear up, socialize, manage your warehouse and customize your ship and your captain. The only thing that really isn't on land is combat."

Well, we would do anything to have something remotely similar to Sea of Thieves, so here's hoping Skull and Bones can rise above the crest of its development troubles. Mind you, it does look like there is more for Ubisoft on the horizon with a rumoured Assassin's Creed Rift delay. What are your thoughts on the game so far? Give us an argh! in the comments below, yeah mateys?
