PS5's new update is hiding a PS VR2 secret

By Kes Eylers-Stephenson,

PlayStation 5 has a new update in beta currently that adds folders and 1440p support. Amongst that excitement, players found references to PS VR2 suggesting that Sony is preparing the hardware for virtual reality compatibility.

The new PS5 update that is in beta certainly sounds like it has plenty to offer, but it turns out the new PS5 update was hiding a PS VR2 secret tucked away behind all the new folders, resolutions, and social interaction changes.

PS VR2 news has been quiet on major news for a little while beyond some tantalising snapshots of the user experience and information about PS VR2 eye-tracking. However, the latest PS5 update has gone into beta and, despite the fact that this stuff should probably be secret and under NDA or something, players have taken screenshots of some of the new details tucked away in the menus. It turns out, that Sony is making small additions in preparation for PS VR2 by adding VR2 Sense Controller functionality under the Accessories tab and allowing for a Communication Method.

What does this mean? Well, the functionality itself isn't exciting beyond the fact that consoles probably now support the device, but the fact that Sony is beginning to test PS VR2 functionality in a more public space is promising. Though many have taken this to mean the release date might be nearing — early 2023 seems to be on the tongue — it's worth remembering that we are in strange, supply-limited times right now. Sony might be manufacturing, but it will probably take much longer to get stock to sufficient levels for sale than usual.

That doesn't mean it won't be early 2023, just that you shouldn't get your hopes up. Plenty more news to catch up on, like Resident Evil hitting PS VR2 or the thankfully replacable PS VR2 wire. What do you think of the news? Are you excited about PS VR2? Let us know in the comments and we will see you in the TT reality down there!
