Could Midnight Fight Express be the next big PlayStation indie?

By Kes Eylers-Stephenson,

Midnight Fight Express is an indie game that is an uber-violent brawler with 80s flair. The one-man-developed title is coming to PlayStation 4 on August 23rd and looks like it could kick you off your feet.

Midnight Fight Express looks like it could be another big indie hit for PlayStation, following in the footsteps of the much less violent titles like Stray and Kena Bridge of Spirits. The latest behind-the-scenes footage illustrates just how the one-man-development team put together this crazy brawler.

Indie game Midnight Fight Express keeps impressing ahead of PlayStation release

With a new trailer (embedded below), a PlayStation Blog post opened up the process of bringing Jacob Dzwinel's Midnight Fight Express to life. It's an incredibly violent 80s-cinema-inspired top-down brawler with mo-capped fighting animations. Eric Jacobus, the martial artist, went and recorded unique animations for the PS4 title.

The article notes that a planned 300 animations were made over a four-day mo-cap shoot. However, because of the top-down angle, "each move had to be performed against an enemy to the north, south, east, and west. There weren’t 300 shots; there were 1,200 shots to be done over the course of 4 days." By the sounds of it, the team were enthused with creating crazy stuff to put in: "Jacobus and Huerto would suggest their ludicrous ideas, and Dzwinel would say whether it was too long, too short, too crazy, or (more often) not crazy enough."

There are loads of small details that are given light too, like the fact the combat engine could only have weapons tied to the right hand and the fact that being able to do intense mo-cap like this is no longer as development heavy as it used to be. All in all, we have to say, we are getting really hyped here at the TrueTrophies team for this. It looks like it could be one of those stealth indie hits just like we thought a certain cat game was in our Stray review. What do you think? Agree with our take? Let us know in the comments.
