Persona 5 Royal PS5 upgrade somehow more insulting than TLOU P1

Persona 5 Royal was an absolute treat both in visuals and gameplay with a fantastic OST and engaging characters. However, the PS5 upgrade offering is arguably even more insulting than TLOU P1.

It has never been a better time to be a fan of both Atlus and the Persona series. With the recent unveiling that Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden will both be coming to PS4 consoles in the near future, along with Persona 5 Royal coming to PS5 consoles on October 21st 2022. This news has recently had a damper to it in regards to Persona 5 Royal and the PS5 upgrade that is somehow as wild as The Last of Us Part 1 getting a third release.

No free upgrade for PS5 users who own the PS4 version of Persona 5 Royal

Persona 5 Royal is coming to PS5 soon!

Spotted by PushSqaure, over on the Persona Channel website in the FAQ section, a quote has been roughly translated that says: "There are no products for purchasers, we would appreciate it if you could purchase 'Persona 5 The Royal' for PlayStation 5 when you play with PlayStation 5."

This pretty much confirms that anyone who already owns a copy of Persona 5 Royal on the PS4 will not be able to access a free PS5 upgrade of P5R. Instead, they will need to purchase another copy of the game to get access to the enhancements the PS5 version will offer. Free PS5 upgrades have become something of a norm with other video game publishers providing PlayStation users with a free PS5 upgrade of a game they already own on the PS4.

Persona users are left out in the cold

This news is really disappointing to hear, although not surprising. We will probably start to see this a lot more going forward as the PS4 slowly becomes a relic of the past. Fans who have already purchased the base game of Persona 5 and then purchased the extended edition release of Persona 5 Royal are going to have to fork out even more cash if they want the PS5 version. Which sucks.

This almost feels similar to the recent TLOU Part 1 situation, where fans are once again having to pay full price for a game they will now be buying for the third time. Similarly, Persona fans are going to be doing with P5R for the PS5. I wonder if the PS5 version of the Persona 5 Royal trophies will automatically unlock? I kind of hope they don’t as I won't be mad about unlocking all of the trophies again as that is always a fun time for me. Would this bother you?
