PS VR2 may get user-friendly replaceable headset wire from Sony

By Sean Lawson,

Some new information points to PlayStation giving players the ability to replace the PS VR2 headset wire if it was to break — something the original PS VR did not allow users to do.

Sony is putting its all into crafting an immersive and unique experience in the form of the new PlayStation VR2. It seems Sony wants to incorporate some small changes here and there that will make the next instalment of the VR headset even more user-friendly. Players may even be able to replace the wire of the headset thanks to some new information that has come to light.

PS VR2 could allow players to replace the VR headset wire

YouTuber Bryan Paul, from PSVR2 Without Parole, discusses in a recent livestream the possibilities of the PS VR2 headset having a replaceable wire thanks to one of his inside sources. In the hour-long livestream, Paul talks about the original PS VR not allowing players to replace the wire of the headset, providing images of VR headsets with snapped and frayed cables that no longer work. These PS VR headsets would have to be repaired/replaced by Sony or taken to a shop for an attempted fix.

Paul explains how there is no way to disconnect the wire from the PS VR, but there is a way on the PS VR2: "If you bring up a picture of the PS VR2 there's a little notch and that is exactly what you are seeing, it is a propriety connection with the other end being a USB-C cable. Unlike with PS VR1 where you don't even see where it connects, you can disconnect it on PS VR2."

Paul then discusses how Sony might go about providing these replacement wires if needed: "I am assuming you won't be able to just walk into a store and say 'I need a replacement PS VR cable' but I am sure Sony will sell them, because otherwise, what's the point of it being detachable, you need to be able to replace this thing."

If Sony is to sell replacement cables for the PS VR2 headset, there is also the possibility that they could sell longer cables, and Myles Dyer, who joined Paul on the livestream, joked about Sony providing different coloured cables. Paul goes on to back his claims up saying: "This is 100% accurate information, this isn't a rumour, I am protecting my sources as I always do, but it is 100% detachable."

Although Paul doesn't reveal who his source is in the livestream, he is known to be very accurate with his leaks and tries to provide legitimate information to his viewers. PSVR2 Without Parole recently provided the exact specs of the headset months before they were unveiled. As with all leaks, however, take everything with a grain of salt until Sony makes an official announcement.

PS VR2 news has been ramping up these past few weeks, with a broken NDA leading to a PlayStation PSVR 2 leak and confirmation that PS VR2 eye tracking will be incorporated into the headset. The most exciting news, of course, comes in the form of Resident Evil Village for PS VR2 finally letting Dimitrescu step on you. What a time to be alive — or stepped on, whatever your poison is.

What do you guys think of the wire possibly being detachable? Are you all excited for the PS VR2 to launch? Let me know in the comments below!
