What are the best games on PS Plus? — December 2022

Let's look at some of the best PlayStation Plus Premium, Extra, and Essential games on Sony's subscription service for December 2022.

The best PS Plus Essential games
Jason VoorheesJason Voorhees is a perfect character to slice the night away with

Mortal Kombat X

Mortal Kombat X is a fantastic fighting game that you can download and play right now on PS Plus Essential. While its sequel Mortal Kombat 11 made it onto our best fighting games list, MKX was very close to taking the spot, with the MK11 just edging it out thanks to its robust roster and cleaner visuals.

The Mortal Kombat X trophies will be a Brutality that may even lead to a full-on Fatality for those seeking to earn the platinum trophy 'Platinum Trophy' — originality at its finest. The platinum trophy currently sits with an eye-wateringly low completion rate of 0.1% on PSN. This means even veteran fighting game enthusiasts are in for an absolute beatdown if they want to earn this shiny little beauty. Thankfully the Mortal Kombat 11 trophies are slightly easier to earn if you fancy adding at least one game in the Mortal Kombat series to your trophy list.

Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm 4

Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 brings the Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm series to an epic close, showcasing the final and legendary arc of the Naruto Shippuden anime/manga series. We get to witness Team Seven's epic battle against Kaguya, Naruto and Sasuke's final confrontation, and lots of ninja RPG goodness as we battle our way through heaps of familiar faces that we both love and hate.

The Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 trophies are also an absolute treat to work through — thanks to the simple fact that the platinum trophy 'Perfect Storm Master' is a breeze to earn. While the small completion rate of 1.4% on PSN probably looks quite intimidating, we assure you that it's not all that difficult to achieve. The main trophies that will take some work and a little bit of patience will be getting S-Ranks in all of the major boss fights that take place throughout the game. But, if you can nail these that platinum is as good as yours.

Overcooked 2

Overcooked 2 is a cute and charming little game that definitely won't turn you against all of your loved ones when they keep bringing you that goddam tomato when you explicitly said you wanted a goddam potato and... now look! We've lost — and it's all your goddam fault! Apologies, I don't what came over me there. As we were saying, the Overcooked series is an amazing multiplayer party game that you can play with your friends and family as you 'help' one another create tasty meals for your clientele. What could possibly go wrong? Don't answer that question.

The Overcooked 2 trophies will be every sous chef's nightmare to earn for a multitude of reasons, looking at the trophy list we can see that there are a fair few tricky little trophies littered throughout that will stop you from earning the beautiful platinum trophy 'Master Chef.' The most obvious issue is that you are dependent on your friends and family in being able to actually aid you in the kitchen as you you live your best life being the chef that you could never amount to in real life. This game will induce stress and we can't help but love every chaotic moment. It's why it made it onto our best PS4 games list and best co-op games as well.

Get ready for a good old JRPG!Get ready for a good old JRPG!

Ys VIII Lacrimosa of Dana

Ys VIII Lacrimosa of Dana puts you in the role of Adol, who awakens to find himself stranded on a cursed island. With no other option, he and the other shipwrecked passengers must build a village to challenge the fearsome beasts that roam the lands. Amidst this chaos, Adol begins to dream of a mysterious blue-haired woman, but, just who is she?

The Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana trophies will put a lot of players through their paces, but for the veteran JRPG fans out there, you shouldn't have too much of an issue snagging the platinum trophy called 'Adventurer Extraordinaire.' The trophy currently sits with an overall completion rate of 3.7% on PSN and 16.1% from our TT community. The gameplay is a lot of fun, taking down enemies feels clean and stylish while building up the village and saving all the shipwrecked passengers breaks up the game quite nicely.

This is certainly one game to check out on PS Plus when you can, especially since the whole drama that kicked off with it being delisted from PS Plus, only to be brought back a few days later. This JRPG delight is worth your time if you have it to spare, we assure you that it won't disappoint.

God Of War

With God of War Ragnarok finally out in the world, and over 25% of you already finishing up the story in the newest instalment of the God of War series, why not jump back into where it all started with the original God of War game? This title was re-released onto both PS3 and the PS Vita, where it was also accompanied by an entire trophy list for all of us trophy hunters to delve into. This really helps make this PS2 game feel fresh and up-to-date, regardless of if the graphics are a little rough by today's standards.

The God of War trophies will put you through your hack-and-slash paces as you try and dice your way to the platinum trophy 'Trophy of Zeus.' Anyone wondering if this is going to be a pretty tough time is in luck, the platinum trophy has a completion rate of 5.2% on PSN — a mighty fine sign that you shouldn't have too much trouble earning this glorious platinum treasure. With the trophies 'I'll Take the Physical Challenge' and 'Speed of Jason McDonald' being the only real hindrances in your way.

Ape Escape TrophiesApe Escape is an absolute classic and a fun platinum to boot

Ape Escape

Ape Escape was one of the first PS1 classics to make its way to everyone who is subbed at the Premium tier of PS Plus, not only that it even came with a glorious platinum trophy that certainly added an extra element of fun to this cooky little game. The whole premise follows you as you chase down apes all across a now ape-infested timeline. Honestly, it's a monkey of a good time. While the control scheme can feel a little counterintuitive, once you have the hang of it you'll be catching those cheeky little apes left, right, and centre. Ape Escape even made it onto our best PS1 games on PS Plus Premium, make sure to check that out for more classic goodness.

When it comes to the Ape Escape trophies, you aren't looking at anything too tedious as you attempt to wrangle up another platinum trophy, this time in the form of 'No Ape Can Escape.' The platinum currently has an overall completion rate of 9.5% which is a telling sign that this is a pretty simple one to snap up if you have seven or so hours to dedicate to this wonderful and nostalgic trip down memory lane.

Syphon Filter 2Syphon Filter 2 is a PS1 Classic

Syphon Filter 2

Bend Studio's Syphon Filter 2 was recently added to the small list of PS Plus Premium classic titles that Sony is rolling out to subscribers. In past months PlayStation has failed to update the premium tier with any new games. Thankfully, this month saw the arrival of a fair few titles. While the Syphon Filter by itself is worthy of being on this list, the added bonus that this is the sixth PS1 classic game to receive a platinum trophy is also giving it some extra points in our eyes at TT.

Talking about the Syphon Filter 2 trophies, players who get invested in this classic little game are in for a pretty easy ride. Every trophy is related to simply beating all the levels and completing the game. You'll amass a nice amount of silver and gold trophies whilst you're gunning for that platinum trophy called 'Fantastic Job, Gabe.' The trophy sits with a completion rate of 3.6% on PSN, which is actually pretty low considering all you need to do is beat the game to earn this platinum. So what are you waiting for? Get on it and boost that completion score!

Make sure you return to this page regularly, as we will be constantly updating with new titles that we think you will want to dive on into. Also, make sure to check out this PlayStation Plus game list that updates whenever a title is added or removed from the PS Plus Premium or Extra tiers. So, what do you think of the list so far? Any games you think deserve to be added in the future? Sound off in the comments!
