Sony pulls PlayStation from Gamescom 2022

By Kes Eylers-Stephenson,

PlayStation won't be in attendance at Gamescom 2022, Sony Interactive Entertainment has confirmed. This follows a trend of several publishers pulling out, like Take-Two, Activision Blizzard, and Nintendo.

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) will not bring PlayStation to Gamescom 2022, the company confirmed to the German outlet Games Wirtschaft. This is Gamescom's first hybrid live event since the global pandemic hit, so it was to be expected that industry giants like Nintendo and Sony would not be attending.

Gamescom 2022 might have been expected to bring news of PS VR2 or God of War Ragnarok, but neither will be present at Gamescom 2022. This follows news that Activision, Take-Two Interactive, and Nintendo won't be in attendance either.

Instead, 250 companies will be present with several major publishers lined-up, including THQ Nordic, Koch Media, and Bandai Namco. We suspect EA might show up too, as this is normally the annual FIFA reveal event or, in days of yore, the first hands-on.

VGC has reported mutterings that publishers have stopped making bespoke pre-release demos after the COVID pandemic. These have always taken a lot of work for a development team, but without them, there will likely be little to show at a public event like Gamescom.

Gamescom 2022 takes place from August 24th to the 28th in Cologne, with a few online showcases airing alongside the event. This will be preceded by Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 23rd. Are you gutted about the news? Was it expected? Let us know in the comments, and see you there!
