State of Play — September 2023

The September 2023 State of Play was held on Thursday, September 14, 2023, and was focused on a combination of indies and third-party releases. However, Sony did a little fib because Marvel's Spider-Man 2 appeared alongside some of the big dogs. Square Enix brought Final Fantasy VIII Rebirth and Arrowhead brought Helldivers 2.

Baby Steps

Coming to PS5 and PC in Summer 2024, Baby Steps is a keep-your-balance limb failure sim like Octodad or QWOP. However, this game clearly has a much more focused eye for genuine comedy because every trailer we have seen for it so far makes us think that collecting those Baby Steps trophies is going to be one of the most genuinely funny times of 2024. The whole grapple hook bit in the trailer above had me dying, so I'm well on board with it!

Roblox

Lee has you covered with a separate story on the new Roblox PS5 and PS4 release date. However, you can expect that the limited Roblox trophies will be a success in October 2023 given how popular the game has proved on PC.

Ghostbusters Rise Of The Ghost Lord

The Ghostbusters Rise of the Ghost Lord trophies will be a PS VR2 collection for those of you who can't wait to get involved with ectoplasms and marshmallow men up close and personal. The game is coming to PS VR2 via PS5 on Tuesday, October 26, 2023, so make sure you keep an eye out before this floats out of your vision.

Resident Evil 4 — VR Mode and Separate Ways DLC

If you have already collected all the Resident Evil 4 trophies, you might have thought your work was done! In fact, that's not the case at all as now you will have to step back into the world of terror on Thursday, September 21, 2023, to (probably) collect yet more trophies in a DLC pack. This will come with content updates for The Mercenaries on both PS5 and PS4 platforms. In addition, a PS VR2 update is coming for the game this winter at an as-of-yet unspecified date. Awesome!

Avatar Frontiers of Pandora

In what I would argue is the best trailer yet for Avatar Frontiers of Pandora, we got a better idea of the story of Ubisoft's upcoming Far-Cry-itisation of James Cameron's film series. You get to see a lot more of the world in motion and it looks really quite good: from the underwater stuff to the riding of strange animals on land and sky. The parkour bits look great in first-person as well. Will you be collecting Avatar Frontiers of Pandora trophies when it releases for PS5 on Thursday, December 7, 2023?

Ghostrunner 2

If those Ghostrunner 2 trophies are as hard as those in the first game, you will indeed be in for a fantastically grueling time. One of the purest action games around, Ghostrunner 2's latest trailer emphasizes the suit and the upgrades you can attach before heading out into the neon-lit city with your sword. A demo is available now before Ghostrunner 2 releases on PS5 on Thursday, October 26, 2023.

PS5's new 'Deep Earth Collection' covers and DualSenses

Hello, pretentious arthouse covers and controllers nigh on indistinguishable from other colors but given a name that says 'Jazz Band on Tuesday night at the in-house brewery.' Expensive effects aside, there are some new colors for the DualSense and PS5 console covers called Volcanic Red, Cobalt Blue, and Sterling Silver. Let me tell you all about them: they look red, blue, and silver. That's it.

Helldivers 2

We also learned that early 2024 is going to be absolutely stacked with quality PS5 games, with the showcase revealing both the delayed Helldivers 2 release date.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2

Despite Sony insisting that the show would be dedicated to third-party partners, we still got an excellent new Marvel's Spider-Man 2 State of Play trailer. This time around, we got a better look at what the game's open world will feel like, all the new costumes we can unlock, and hints of new villains to beat up in the game's side content.

Tails of Arise Beyond the Dream

A new announcement for Bandi Namco's long-running JRPG series, the Tails of Arise Beyond the Dream expansion is coming to PS5 and PS4 on Thursday, November 9, 2023. It's apparently packing another 20 hours of content to help round out the story, which seems on point for the series' insane lengths, but fans absolutely love this announcement after Tails of Arise was lauded as a huge return to form for the series.

Honkai Star Rail

I feel so ill-qualified to talk about anything relating to the Hoyoverse because so many adore Genshin Impact on PS4 and are just foaming at the mouth for Honaki Star Rail trophies on PS5 when it releases on Wednesday, October 11, 2023 — whereas I'm just completely out of the loop. The RPG has received a solid reception everywhere it has released so far and the gatcha elements seem to have shaken away the controversy surrounding them, so it looks set to be huge when it lands next month.

Foamstars

I hope you are absolutely hyped out of your mind for the upcoming Foamstars trophies on PS5 and PS4. That's right, Square Enix has given us another trailer for the Splatoon-looking game that managed to leave everyone in horror after appearing at Sony's big PlayStation Showcase earlier this year. Well, no, we have beta coming and it will be live from Friday, September 29, 2023, until Sunday, October 1, 2023. Listen, I've heard it's surprisingly good, so why not give it a blast then?

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

The eagerly anticipated Final Fantasy VII Rebirth release date is finally here alongside a trailer that really showcased the new open-world in all of it's fine PS5 glory. Seriously nice stuff from the action JRPG — if that's even a genre that exists.

State of Play — February 2023

The State of Play for February 2023 was hosted on Thursday, February 23, 2023. As an early event of the year, it was a stong showcase that lined up the 2023 calendar and let us in on a few new indies that were coming. A solid if unspectacular showcase.

PS VR2 gets six games showcased and announced

All the games announced here can be found in the upcoming PSVR 2 games article, so we wanted to pay specific attention to two games. We kind of have no idea what is going on in the trailer, but we will definitely be grabbing The Foglands trophies when it comes out. The card-dealing Western-themed shooter looks odd and wonderful. We will likewise be diving into the Humanity trophies. It looks nuts, we literally don't know what to do except tell you to check out the trailer in the State of Play video above.

Destiny 2 Lightfall cinematic trailer

Destiny 2, as we all know, is chugging along as a live-service, meaning new content is just around the corner in the form of one of the biggest expansions ever: Lightfall. This particular trailer was a cinematic one, so check it out above. It is a stunner, frankly — even if none of us on the team play it!
Tchia is hitting PS Plus Extra next month as a day one exclusiveTchia is hitting PS Plus Extra next month as a day one exclusive

Tchia is coming to PS Plus Extra day one

We will be collecting those Tchia trophies as part of PS Plus Extra soon! The lovely indie has long been a pick of ours, so read all about this news in our PS Plus Extra Tchia day one update.

New PS Plus games announced for March 2023

A bumper announcement here! Sony released the PS Plus games for the month across all of its services. If you want to read more, check out the announcements here:

Goodbye Volcano High release date

A wonderful looking indie about dinosaurs rocking through High School before a big meteor hits the planet, we'll absolutely be grabbing the Goodbye Volcano High trophies as soon as it releases on PS5 and PS4 on June 15, 2023. It looks kind of depressing, but superb!

Naruto x Boruto Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections trailer drops

Some people will be very happy about seeing a new trailer and are positively shaking with excitement at the prospect of those Naruto x Boruto Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections trophies. Unfortunately, you have a writer scribing this who has no idea what any of this strange nonsense is, but the game is coming in 2023 to PS5 and PS4. Can't wait to collect all those Dragon Balls and get out in One Piece!

State of Play — Baldurs Gate 3State of Play — Baldurs Gate 3

Baldurs Gate 3 looks outrageously good

Get us hunting those Baldurs Gate III trophies, right now. Lee has all the details for you on the news that Baldurs Gate 3 is a PS5 exculsive. The RPG is coming to PS5 on August 31, 2023.

Wayfinder trailer arrives for the PS5 and PS4 fantasy game

Frankly, we aren't quite sure what Wayfinder is even after watching the trailer for the new fantasy game for PS5 and PS4. It's a third-person multiplayer action-RPG game, sure: but we aren't quite sure what is separating it from the pack of free-to-play games on offer elsewhere at the moment. It has that bright and texture-less cartoon style we've come to expect from literally everything, as well as strangely proportioned characters. Another trailer is needed to entice us in, we think. The beta is dropping on February 28, 2023 — so check it out then.

Street Fighter 6 adds new characters in latest trailer

As we wait for the Street Fighter 6 trophies to drop, Capcom graced us all with a new trailer that showcased two fan-favourite characters and a new fighter making a slamdunk onto the upcoming roster. Say hello to Cammy and Zangief, and newcomer Lily.

Resident Evil 4 trailer ramps up the horror

The newest Resident Evil 4 trailer confirmed a demo will be coming our way imminently as well as the title featuring a Mercenaries mode that will be included as free DLC at launch — and who can say no to free DLC, right? We can’t wait to dive into all of the Resident Evil 4 trophies. RE4 drops on March 24, 2023 for PS5 and PS4.

Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League gameplay

Suicide Squad's latest State of Play venture has left fans unamused.Suicide Squad's latest State of Play venture has left fans unamused.

Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League got a substantial amount of screentime, as expected. This included a controversial battle pass and some worrying gameplay footage that has fans worried about the future of the Arkham universe. Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League is PS5-only and releases on May 26, 2023.

State of Play — September 2022

The State of Play for September 2022 was hosted on Tuesday, September 13, 2022. It revealed a lot of smaller details like a new Tekken 8 announcement and plenty for the then-upcoming PS VR2, as well as a Like A Dragon Ishin reveal.

Tekken 8 announced in new trailer

Straight from the off, your chance to earn the Tekken 8 trophies came out swinging for PS5. Without a release date, the platform is pretty much the only thing to think about for this fighting game. You can see it, though; with those intensive water effects probably only possibly using 'next-gen' technology. Tekken 7 is one of the best PS4 games, so here is hoping this highly anticipated game repeats the feat on PS5.

Two PS VR2 game reveals — Star Wars and Demeo

These two games have been extensively covered in our PS VR2 and Kojima article. The crux of it is that the Tales From the Galaxy's Edge trophies will bring you on an adventure in a galaxy far, far away that was once on the Meta Quest range of VR devices. On the other eye is Demeo trophies, a tabletop game come to life in VR and one that will really benefit from all the PS VR enhancements on Sony's new device like eye-tracking.

Like a Dragon IshinLike a Dragon Ishin was revealed

A new Yakuza game

Your chance to earn Like A Dragon Ishin trophies was announced at the show. It is coming to PS5 and PS4 and is a remaster of 2014's 2014 Japan-exclusive Yakuza title Ryū ga Gotoku Ishin! You can read all about it in the announcement article, alongside the other new Yakuza Like a Dragon games announced at TGS.

Hogwarts Legacy gets exclusive DLC

Hogwarts Legacy (PS4) was at the showcase with a PlayStation-exclusive DLC pack. The mission in question is called Haunted Hogsmead Shop and it doesn't appear to make a difference to the game, but content exclusivity is always a bit grubby. The actual game looks great, we think!

Survival driver Pacific Drive travels to PS5 in 2023

Pacific Drive trophies was one of the most fun reveals of the show because we had no idea what to expect. Indeed, Ironwood Studios put together this weird little trailer for its driving game, which is a first-person-only, and survival game. Got all that? It looks really intriguing and like it might be a good PS5 exclusive for 2023.

PlayStation Stars features trophies and more ahead of Asia rollout

Grace Chen announced that PlayStation Stars, Sony's new reward programme, would be rolling out in Asia. We covered this one extensively in our PlayStation Stars digital junk is cute but don’t forget the free games article, so be sure to check that out if you are interested further.

Two anime games — Stellar Blade and Synduality

We have paired the animes together here because of our rather patchy knowledge of both titles. Synduality tropphies will be coming as the first of the two and is set to release in 2023. It's a sci-fi third-person shooter featuring mechs and a 2222 world where humanity was nearly wiped out by bad rain. It's PvPvE, but no platforms have been announced yet.

Next was the former Project Eve game, but now you'll be collecting the Stellar Blade trophies. This PS5 exclusive is set for 2023 and is — we think — an action-adventure. Details are scarce outside of a, but the most interesting aspect of this early trailer might be the return of Sony Interactive Entertainment logo. We were fairly certain that that was retired for PlayStation Studios in all cases, but Stellar Blade appears to be rocking it all the same.

Rise of the RoninRise of the Ronin was incredible

Rise of the Ronin was game of the show

Wow. Rise of the Ronin trophies have our dedicated attention with this spectacular trailer, which you can check out in our Nioh 3 article. This Team Ninja developed action-RPG is coming to PS5 only in 2024. We can't wait!

God of War Ragnarok gets a new story trailer and controller

God of War Ragnarok is coming and you'd better believe Sony pulled out a corker for this event. We covered the story trailer extensively in our New God of War Ragnarok trailer has perfect jellyfish and friendship ratio article, but the controller reveal was also a big part of the showing. No word yet on its cost, but if you are interested recommend investing as soon as possible because scalpers will have it. It will be released on November 9, 2022, along with the game — so get on it now if you like it!

State of Play — June 2022

June 2022's State of Play was hosted on Thursday, June 2, 2022, and featured a lot of Resident Evil 4, Final Fantasy XVI, and Street Fighter 6. It was a bit of a summer blowout, as you can see by the announcements below.

Resident Evil 4 for PS5 and PS VR2 announced

Capcom started the show by announcing Resident Evil 4 remake for PS5. The game is slated to hit on March 24, 2022 — a period of the year Capcom has had plenty of success with as of late. The game will still have the elements that made the 2005 game so special but with improvements to controls and graphics. The PS VR2 content appears to be a post-launch deal.

Resident Evil Village getting PS VR2 functionality

We hope you've got all the Resident Evil Villiage trophies because another set is sure to be standing nine feet over you next year as the game gets PS VR2 support. No announcement on the date here, but we imagine it is at the launch of the new hardware. The campaign is fully supported in VR and promises to make use of all of its features.

The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners — Chapter 2: Retribution ready to slay PS VR2

The first The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners was one of the most loved PlayStation VR games the first time around, so Chapter 2: Retribution is sure to be a huge hit on PS VR2. The direct sequel features a slew of new story content, maps, weapons, tools, and challenges.

No Man's Sky gets PS VR2 support

No Man's Sky feels everlasting, and a PS VR2 announcement has done nothing to dissuade us of that fact. The game already has a VR release, so this new version will take advantage of those PS VR2 specs. Hello Games promised that more is to come from this version of the game, so we will keep you updated.

Horizon Call of the Mountain looks fantastic in PS VR2 trailer

Guerrilla Games' fantastic Horizon Forbidden West might have three new trophies which you can read all about, but it was our upcoming opportunity to collect Horizon Call of the Mountain trophies that stole the show. You will be playing as Ryas, an ex-Shadow Carja warrior, as he tries to redeem himself by taking on an investigation for the Sundom. There looks to be plenty of machines to fight, weapons to use, and tools to grasp here, and it has us stupidly excited. Aloy is going to show up too, which is almost a home as it would be nice to not make Horizon's magnificently detailed world suffer from Star Wars small universe syndrome, but hey — she's a cool chick. There is also a river ride experience.

Marvel's Spider-Man and Miles Morales next PlayStation games on PC

New PlayStation Studio Nixxes finally has its name on a PC port for Sony: both the Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered trophies and the Miles Morales trophies. The pair of games are coming with keyboard and mouse support, render settings, raytraced reflections, and more bits and bobs to be announced down the line by Insomniac Games. The first game comes to PC on August 12th, 2022, while Mile Morales is waiting in the wings for a later 2022 release.

Sci-fi cat-former Stray comes to PlayStation Plus Extra at launch

Stray is a cat-former (patent pending) that has us really excited. The sci-fi setting, the neon lights, and the cat. The release date is now set for July 19, 2022, and guess what... it's coming on day one to PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium. This game was already on the must-play list, but hopefully, now it is on the minds of a few more players! The PlayStation Blog has a wonderful article penned by the team as well, so check that out.

The Callisto Protocol gets PS5 and PS4 release date

The Callisto Protocol trophies have been made by Striking Distance Studios and will be a sci-fi survival horror game released on December 2, 2022. The setting is on Jupiter's moon Callisto, escapes from the Black Iron Prison only to find that there is an outbreak. Now he must live while trying to fight his way free. It sounds great, and we can't wait to see it in action. Actually, this author is a huge messy blob when faced with horror, so someone else on the team will instead.

Rollerdrome is so stylish, we can't handle it

Rollerdrome is from Roll7, the team behind OlliOlli World trophies, and oh my good gosh... we need all hands on deck to clean up this dribble. It looks gorgeous. It's 2030's sporting goodness on rollerblades with guns and slow-mo and look at it! It looks fast-paced and relentless, with so many flips! It is coming on August 16, 2022 for PS5 and PS4.

Eternights set to make your anime heart bleed in 2023

Eternights trophies are coming for the weird anime-style action dating sim on PS5 and PS4 in late 2023. We would be lying if we said we understood any of it, but the biking action looks phenomenal, and some of the visual flairs look outstanding. Let's hope the writing lives up to the rest!

Street Fighter 6 is not playing; its here to revolutionise fighting games

Street Fighter 6 had a massive trailer at the State of Play, announcing that it would be landing its blows on PS5 and PS4 in 2023. Ryu, Chun-Li, and Luke all return, joined by a drunken boxer named Jamie. There seem to be hub-world elements linking various frame modes like Arcade Mode, Online, Training Mode, and Local versus Battles. One is called the Fighting Ground, the Battle Ground appears to be a space for online content, and the World Tour is set to rejuvenate the story mode with something really ambitious. Queue a commentary team for matches, modernized controls, and a refreshed battle system; Street Fighter 6 is going hard. The new art style that tends toward a stylized realism is wicked, and we highly recommend checking out the PlayStation Blog post to see more of it.

Tunic is finally coming to PlayStation in 2022

Tunic is really good. You can read all about it over on TA, and so you should! The little foxes' old-school adventure RPG will be coming on September 27, 2022. There is not much more we can add other than — be excited!

Season: A Letter to the Future set to be an indie darling in new trailer

Season: A Letter to the Future will be released on PS4 and PS5 in late 2022. The trailer is absolutely fascinating and lays out all the exploring and photographing you will be doing as you seek to get to the bottom of the mysterious riddle of the world around you. It seems like there are different layers to the world based on music, arch, voices, religion, and traces of previous seasons, all of which have an associated tool. This looks seriously trippy stuff, so we can't wait to hop on our bike and get going!

Final Fantasy XVI headlines with trailer and 2023 PS5 release date

Final Fantasy XVI shook a few worlds with its State of Play trailer announcing that it will be hitting PS5 in the summer of 2023. We feel like we would be shortchanging you on the characters, development staff, and screenshots of the game if we didn't point you towards PlayStation Blog. It looks great, though — the particle effects are clearly in full force during magnificent combat animations, the story seems intriguing, the world totally encapsulates what Final Fantasy is all about, and it looks like it could hit a supremely exciting grand scale.

That's our recap for State of Play! What did you think of the latest show? Let us know in the comments, and we will see you there!
