Bungie will be Sony's PlayStation live-service quality control By Kes Eylers-Stephenson, 30 May 2022 FollowtopicsDestiny 2BungieFree to PlayIndustry NewsKes Eylers-Stephenson Sony plans to use its $3.6 billion Bungie acquisition to help set up an SIE Live Service Centre of Excellence division for its upcoming PS5 and PS4 games. Those Sony financial reports from last week are spinning up plenty of fresh information for the eagle-eyed users of ResetEra. This time, it's all about what happens after Sony acquires Bungie and its role in helping with the endless slate of PlayStation Studios-developed live-service games.Bungie to help with 10+ live-service games for PlayStationSony expects that the acquisition of Bungie will go through in Q3 2022, or in normal person talk: by the end of this year. A huge part of Sony's $3.6 billion investment was to garner expertise in live-service games and its plans from the report clearly show this. Within a year of completion, Sony wants to have an SIE Live Service Centre of Excellence division that is fully integrated into PlayStation Studios with Bungie helping develop the new branch. Now despite the team being a Sony-owned studio, Bungie will be operating separately from PlayStation's in-house teams. This means its games will be multi-platform and the studio proper will probably have its own distinct management structure. However, Sony also sees the team as a vital component of the future — within a year it expects the team to be assisting with PS Studio game development, building expertise in live-service, conducting individual title reviews for their live-service capabilities, and to be a significant part of all live-service-related decision making. This integration looks like it will be quick and decisive, so we want to know what you think! Do you trust Bungie to help make the right calls?
