Killzone PS VR2 shooting for launch release — report

By Kes Eylers-Stephenson,

A new report claims that PS VR2 might be getting a Killzone game at launch. Sony apparently started work on a new title in the franchise in 2019 with Supermassive Games, before pulling it in-house.

Guerrilla Games' PlayStation exclusive FPS series, Killzone, might be making a return for PS VR2's launch according to PSVR2 Without Parole. This comes hot off a new State of Play event announcement at which some of those 20+ launch games for PS VR2 should be shown.

Sony pulls Supermassive Games from PlayStation VR2 Killzone project

Obviously, take this report with a pinch of salt, but Bryan Paul from PSVR2 Without Parole is well-sourced in the VR world. "Everybody was wondering what Supermassive Games was doing after The Inpatient, Bravo Team, and obviously Rush of Blood. Sony has contracted Supermassive to make Killzone VR for PlayStation VR1 and it was in development for years. Sony, ultimately, wasn't happy with the progress that was made, right, and this was in 2019.

"Sony pulled back development from Supermassive of Killzone VR and brought development back in-house internally," Paul continues. "You've got to figure that if they started, even from scratch, saying: 'Hey, here is an IP we know people love. We're trying to make this a VR title. This might be the way forward for Killzone.'

"They are not going to start developing a PS VR1 title in 2019. They saw that PS VR1 was a mild success at best. My theory is that Sony said: 'Let's look forwards! Let's start development of Killzone VR as a PS VR2 title. I'm going to bat on this one — I'm betting it could be a launch title. It's easily been in development for... three years? By the time it comes out, three and a half, four? So, I think Killzone VR will be there at launch."

Well, you know what this makes us think, if true? Sony may have been a bit rash in closing down Guerrilla Cambridge. The team there worked on Killzone Mercenary for Vita and a VR FPS in RIGS before it was closed down due to its lack of commercial successes, despite being tasked with creating games for niche hardware.

Well, what do you think of this one? Would you be keen on seeing Killzone VR? How about seeing it at launch? We have to say, PS VR2 has really grabbed our attention recently, so we are hyped. Get in the comments to discuss!
