WRC Generations developer says it is "always thinking" about PS VR2

By Kes Eylers-Stephenson,

PlayStation VR2 is a "very interesting" prospect for WRC Generations developer KT Racing, but the creative director seemed to confirm that development would be tricky. The PS5's DualSense is a must for the developer, however.

Alain Jarniou, KT Racing's creative director, sat down with us at Bigben Week in Paris recently for an interview. Tucked away in there, we asked all about upcoming rally-sim WRC Generations and Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown. We have clipped put two sections about PS VR2 and DualSense that confirm the developer's interest in the new virtual reality.

WRC Generations and PS VR2 support

"We are always thinking about it! For years, in fact," Jarniou says about PS VR2 support for KT Racing's games. "We made, for E3, a special version of WRC 6 that was on Oculus — just for the show. We all see that it's a big, big thing for driving — for simulation.

"We also know with this kind of experiment that it's a very dedicated development. If you want to do it, you have to spend time and to own it [make] the good choices. When you have the VR on the eyes — the UI, all the things for realisticness, the motion sickness — all this stuff is quite a huge work. So, we always think about it, it's just today the market is not a big market. It's complicated for us to spend the time we need on this kind of stuff and have something that is okay.

"So, yes, we think about it. We've got relationships with Sony [about] the system, we have [spent time with it] months ago. We don't have the kit. Did you try it?" Shaking my head to say no, Jarniou says, "Many, many things that are very — you know, I think they talked about it... eye tracking! I think it's very, very interesting. Yeah, but it's a matter of, you know, of money and time to do this properly."

Using haptic feedback on the PS5 Dualsense controller

"I think we were one of the first games out with the haptic feedback," says Jarniou. Indeed, the team was a forerunner with WRC 9's rather incredible feedback loop on the DualSense which would low-key inspire the amazing work done with Gran Turismo 7's own use of the DualSense. "Yeah, many times with we talked with Sony, and they said, "This is one big thing for us! You should make a special focus on it." So, we spent time with it, and we also [dealt with] all the wheel management with force feedback and stuff like that.

"We already have a good part of the game that is used to manage the feedback. So, we made good work [for the DualSense] around that. Many people say that this game, it was WRC 9 I think, was the first real good experience with the haptics. We are still making it evolve with new sensations, new inputs depending on what's happening in the game, on the car suspension, and stuff like that."

Do you think KT Racing will add PS VR2 support to Generations in the future? It's interesting that it's something the dev wants to do, but it takes too many resources from the rest of the team. Let us know what you think in the comments!
