Classic PS1 game officially getting trophies with PS Plus release

By Kes Eylers-Stephenson,

PS1, PS2, and PSP games never had trophies. With the new PlayStation Plus service adding classic games, the integration of trophies became a hot topic. Bend Studio has confirmed it for one old game, so we now know it can be done.

It's happening. Bend Studio has revealed that its PS1 classics version of Syphon Filter that is coming to the revamped PlayStation Plus will be getting trophies. In so doing, the PlayStation Studio has confirmed that it can be done for older games with the right effort.

Syphon Filter is the first official PS1 game with trophy support

Syphon Filter is coming to the new PlayStation Plus games lineup, along with several other beloved titles like Mr Driller. Ape Escape, and Worms. Since the announcement — and even before, if we are being honest — people have been asking if games on the three consoles that didn't support trophies will have them added retrospectively. The developer of Days Gone, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, and Resistance Retribution on PSP has answered the call.

"Agency intel reports that Syphon Filter will include Trophies when it arrives on the all-new PlayStation Plus. And Yes, you can earn the Platinum too."

This would suggest that any developer with the care to do so will be adding trophies to their older titles. There has been no confirmation from the other teams as to whether they will have all the triggers added to enable trophy popping, but our hopes are high that all the PlayStation Studio additions — Ape Escape, Hot Shots Golf, I.Q. Intelligent Qube, Jumping Flash, and Housemarque's Super Stardust Portable — will all have trophies now. It is worth noting that this doesn't confirm that PSP or PS2 games can have trophies, but it seems more likely than not.

Players have been long frustrated with the lack of communication on the matter, especially since fan-emulated versions of games have been adding trophies for years. If you want to find out everything we know about the PS1, PS2, and PSP games, we have a big article waiting for you!
