Skull & Bones broadsides Ubisoft's "premium games" lineup

By Kes Eylers-Stephenson,

Ubisoft is releasing several "premium games" for PS5 and PS4 over the 2022-2023 fiscal year, including the elusive Skull & Bones and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.

In the Ubisoft earnings report for the financial year 2021-2022, the French company makes note of its slate of "premium games" led by none other than Skull & Bones and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.

When is the Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora release period?

"2022-23 will see the first benefits from this strategy as we look to significantly grow our topline," Ubisoft states in the report. "The biggest driver of our topline growth will be our diverse line-up of premium games, including Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope, and Skull & Bones, as well as other exciting titles. Our growth will also benefit from our Free-to-Play releases, based notably on our biggest IPs. Some of these titles have been undergoing internal and external test phases and are in final stages of development. We expect they will be a meaningful driver of PRI progression in FY23."

This gives us a much better indication of how far out Avatar and Skull & Bones are, with a suggestion that the Avatar's PS5 game will be primed for release in the same quarter as the film release in December — something not guaranteed by the last trailer we saw for it.

Skull & Bones has had a long and troubled development, but a gameplay leak (TA link) has suggested that the game is preparing to set sail. It is worth noting that it is developed by Ubisoft Singapore. Based on the location, to be entitled to a huge tax break the studio must release a new IP within a certain period of development — one imagines that no matter what the game will release to the tune of that deadline.
