Final Fantasy XVI's PS5 development in "final stretch"

By Kes Eylers-Stephenson,

Final Fantasy XVI's release window is closing fast, but game director Naoki Yoshida has teased that the developers are in the "final stretch." Square Enix previously set a release window of Spring.

Gamatsu picked up an interview with Final Fantasy XVI director Naoki Yoshida in the Japanese free instore magazine from Uniqlo, which we believe was sourced from the alberich_ff14's tweet. In the translated version, Yoshida makes an interesting claim about the development of the game.

Final Fantasy XVI release date hint

“Currently, development on the latest title, Final Fantasy XVI, is in the final stretch,” the director confirms. The game had been given a spring date by publisher Square Enix, but we are currently nearing its end. So, Yoshida's words give us more of a clue. It could mean that various assets are being pulled together to make a cohesive whole, which could put it between a year to four months out depending on the development methodology. It could also mean it is in the bug testing phase, which would bring it in at under those four months ready for a quick shadow drop at any time. We veer towards the first guess.

“As a single-player game, Final Fantasy XVI aims to unify the story and gameplay experience," Yosida says. "Unlike online games, which portray multiple players at once, Final Fantasy XVI has an individual focus, which makes the story more immersive. And I think the story has become quite deep. My hope is that the adults who have grown up, understand the rules of society, and drifted away from Final Fantasy thinking ‘the real world isn’t as easy as a video game’ can remember the enthusiasm they had back then. That’s what we’re keeping in mind as we make this game.”

When do you think Final Fantasy could arrive? Is Yosida saying the right things about the direction of the game? Let us know in the comments, you cheeky Chocobo.
