Sonic Origins has four old games for the price of nine chilli dogs

By Kes Eylers-Stephenson,
Sonic Origins has been officially re-announced. The remasters of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and Sonic CD are coming to PS4 and PS5 in June, though the collection will cost you many golden rings.

The Sega mascot is ready to roll into 2022 alongside his furry pals in four adventures ready for this new era. An Anniversary Mode has a modern 16:9 display with infinite lives, allowing you to see more of the screen while you bask in defeating the limitations of mortality. The Classic Mode, meanwhile, will bring you back down to earth with an experience that is loyal to the originals, meaning you can actually feel the lasting effects of being impaled on a spike with the 'Game Over' screen. However, without any ability to play in 16:9 with limited lives, we here at TT are a touch bemused by the apparently lack of flexibility. There will be missions associated with each of the games, allowing you to head to the Vault to grab new content with Medallions, like some of those Special Stages.

Now, rather unfortunately, these games from the Nineties are ready to rob you of all your chilli dogs and leave you gasping for air in a ditch beside a loop-the-loop in Green Hills Zone. The Standard Edition is priced at £32.99/$39.99/€39.99, with the Digital Deluxe Edition coming in at £36.99/$44.99/€44.99. Just to be clear, each of these games has been around since 2011 on PS3 and used to go for £1.69 or thereabouts in the sales.

Now, I don't want to go too hard on Sega here, but it costs like £3.79 for a chilli dog at the local LA Fried Chicken (I can't testify to the quality... yet). You could go for more expensive gourmet chilli dogs from the exquisite-looking chillidogsevents, but I couldn't find a price anywhere, I'm afraid. Anyway, this means I could get roughly nine chilli dogs for the price of this collection of very old games that I mostly already own. I have never tried to eat nine chilli dogs at once, so that would be a whole new experience, unlike playing these retro favourites again. The decision is clear — I should buy the chilli dogs and top up my gym membership.

There is also a preorder scheme, but it is so hare-brained and indecipherable that we are just going to leave you to it. Apparently character animations are DLC now, so that's... cool?

sonic origins pre-order guide

Sonic Origins is coming to PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC on June 23rd to celebrate the Blue Blur's birthday (Blurthday?). Are we being a bit too critical of Sonic's price point? Will you be playing these? We gotta go fast to finish up those Sonic Mania trophies...
