PlayStation Studio and PS VR2 game using Unreal Engine 5

Epic has fully released its new generation of game development tech. To publicise its new offering, Sony announced that PlayStation Studios and PS VR2 games will be built using Unreal Engine 5.

Geoff Keighly published the image from Epic's The State of Unreal 2022 livestream (picked up by PushSquare). In the image, you can see that in the top right portion is the PlayStation and PS VR2 logo. In the bottom left, you can see the new Sony purchase, Haven Studios.

Why does this matter? Well, for PS VR2 it is less surprising as it indicates that Unreal Engine 5 is flexible enough to be used for modern high powered VR units. More interestingly, perhaps, is that a PlayStation Studio — Haven Studios — is using the tech. Sony has both Guerrilla Games' Decima Engine and the secretive Naughty Dog engine in its wheelhouse, and Sony likes to make use of it where possible.

In fact, last generation, only Bend Studio really got away with developing Days Gone on Unreal Engine 4, while Media Molecule made the Bubble Engine for Dreams. So, with Haven Studios using Epic's Unreal Engine 5 — Sony has invested in Epic, mind you — it suggests that the company is ready to start allowing teams to create using non-proprietary game engines. This might be especially important for Haven, who will need to be able to update their AAA live-service game regularly and quickly — something a bit tricky for most in-house game engines, but much easier on something broadly used like Unreal.

A new Tomb Raider and the next The Witcher game will also be using the technology. Are you looking forward to Unreal Engine 5 becoming ubiquitous? Let us know in the comments!
