PlayStation Gameplay Chart: PS5 console exclusive has poor launch, Elden Ring dominates

Elden Ring just keeps mopping up players, while the latest PS5 console exclusive GhostWire: Tokyo appears to be struggling on launch. Here is the top 40 PlayStation Gameplay Chart for the week ending April 3rd, 2022.

I remember those heady days a month ago when it was really exciting to have a contest at the top of the gameplay chart between Elden Ring and Horizon Forbidden West. Now though, both have settled into a steady rhythm with Elden Ring taking home first despite a 9.24% loss in total players since last week and in Horizon taking fifth, slipping a single place from last week and shedding 11.7% of its total players since last week.

More excitingly, Apex Legends has jumped from eighth place to fourth thanks to a native PS5 version of the game. Incredibly, though, we are seeing that the ratio of PS4 to PS5 players is 3:1 in favour of PS4. However, bear in mind that the total player count has increased by 28.5% — a dominant majority of which are PS5 players. That means the PS5 release has been vital to Apex's boost up the chart and we expect to keep seeing the PS4 player count diminish while the PS5 players grow. Our title story this week is the fate of PS5 console exclusive GhostWire: Tokyo. The game has clearly had a poor start to life last week in 36th but has increased its position by one place this week with a sub-1% increase in players. In fairness, it is a PS5 only game. However, we have witnessed Horizon and Elden Ring (and Apex and GT7 and GTA 5 and... you get the point) become dominantly played on PS5, while PS4 player counts have started dropping off. That makes it clear to us that GhostWire: Tokyo hasn't grabbed a majority of players' attention — something highlighted by the rise in players grabbing newly released Tiny Tina's Wonderlands trophies instead, as the game rose from 14th to 12th. That's not a direct comparison, by the way: they are two clearly different games.

Finally, we just wanted to highlight the high podium finish of Team Sonic Racing. Obviously, the bonus title from last month's PlayStation Plus monthly games — Ghosts of Tsushima: Legends — has done very well to sit in 13th, but we think Team Sonic Racing is the more impressive achievement at 17th. Plus games have a habit of dipping hard, but Sonic has kept the engine revving for players and maintained good numbers for five weeks now. Next week we will see it slip, but let's honour the incredible finish the kart racer has made.
