God of War TV series set for Amazon Prime

The God of War series has been Santa Monica's video game gold standard, but it looks like it is set to move into a new format. Apparently, Amazon and Sony Pictures' PlayStation Production will be working on a live-action version.

Deadline has confirmed that the Sony Pictures' PlayStation Productions arm is in negotiations with Amazon Prime Video for a live-action TV series based on the PS2, PS Vita, PS3, and PS4 game series God of War. There has been no confirmation over which game or which branch of mythology the series would take on — though we presume it will begin with the Greek myths.

Deadline editor Nellie Andreeva and writer Alexandra Del Rosario report the impressive names involved, too. The Expanse TV show creators and executive producers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby are involved, having adapted the sci-fi book series by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck (writing under the pen-name James S. A. Corey) exceptionally well across its troubled six series. They also contributed a script to the Alfonso Cuarón-directed modern classic Children of Men in 2006 and Iron Man in 2008. Rafe Judkins, The Wheel of Time executive producer and showrunner, is also involved, which might be vital given that the fantasy series (based on Robert Jordan's books) was Amazon's biggest production to date until The Lord of the Rings TV show.

Obviously, PlayStation Productions will be involved as a collaborator, probably offering producers of its own. The branch of Sony Pictures makes TV and film properties based on PlayStation Studio-linked output in the video game space. It has just released the Uncharted movie featuring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, has The Last of Us TV show coming up featuring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, and has another small screen adaption of Twisted Metal featuring Anthony Mackie on the way.
