GTA 6 "well underway," GTA 5 PS5 edition coming in March

By Kes Eylers-Stephenson,
Rockstar has just dropped two major pieces of news. It has confirmed that GTA VI development is "well underway" and that GTA V's PS5 version will be dropping on March 15th, alongside fresh details.

Over on Rockstar Newswire the company dropped a tiny update on the progress of GTA VI. "With the unprecedented longevity of GTA V, we know many of you have been asking us about a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series," penned the developer and publisher. "With every new project we embark on, our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we have previously delivered — and we are pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway." More details are teased for the future.

Rockstar also confirmed that Grand Theft Auto V on PS5 will release on March 15th. The Newswire post confirms that GTA V and its ever-successful online mode will feature graphics modes with 4K resolution and 60fps for both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Not only that, but Rockstar stated that textures and draw distances will be improved, plus there will be new HDR options and ray tracing. Obviously, load times will improve, and we imagine the PS5 staples like 3D audio and DualSense support will be included.

Naturally, GTA V Story Mode and GTA Online and characters and progression will transfer to PS5 "with a one-time migration at launch." The standalone version of GTA Online will also be launching alongside the game, so those who have finished the story won't have to pick the game up a third time just for that.

GTA Online specifically is getting improvements, too. In these current-gen versions, you will finally be able to skip the prologue of the story before heading online. The online mode will have a new tutorial, though. New players have access to a Career Builder which will give them "their choice of one of four illicit businesses — Biker, Executive, Nightclub Owner, or Gunrunner — and a sizeable GTA$ windfall to help select a property, high-end vehicle, and the firepower required to kickstart their enterprise." Players with existing accounts can also restart their characters to make use of the Career Builder at any time.

Perhaps the most intriguing bit is that the PS5 version of GTA Online has Hao's Special Works auto shop. Located at the LS Car Meet, Hao will hook you up with upgrades for select vehicles for "elite driving performance that takes full advantage of the upgraded power of new console hardware."We aren't quite sure why this is only doable on next-gen, but we imagine it is due to previous frame rate limitations and loading speeds within Los Santos.

So, GTA VI confirmed, and Grand Theft Auto V and GTA Online for PS5 coming on March 15th. Let us know what you think of all this news in the comments below!
