PlayStation Now cards removed from stores ahead of expanded PS Plus rumour

Physical redeemable cards for PlayStation Now, Sony's game streaming service for PS4 titles, have been pulled from UK retailers. If the analysis is correct, this would mark the first step towards the rumoured 'Spartacus' merger with PS Plus.

The report comes from VentureBeat, who discovered an internal memo from UK video game retailer GAME. In the memo, the physical PlayStation Now redeemable cards are being pulled from shop floors, meaning no new subscriptions can be bought this way.

The internal GAME memo states: “Stores have until the close of day Wednesday 19th, January to remove all POS and ESD cards from all customer-facing areas and update their digital bays in line with this week’s upcoming commercial update … .”

Jeff Grubb, the source of the news, has stated that the cards will allegedly have to be pulled from stores by January 21st, rather than the 19th stated in the quote. He claims he has heard that "retailers in the U.S. and Canada began pulling PS Now cards from their shelves and online stores weeks ago."

Since the original report from Grubb, Sony has responded. “Globally, we are moving from PlayStation Now gift cards to focus on our current cash denomination PlayStation gift cards, which can be redeemed for PlayStation Now.” Of course, even though a Now subscription is still available through redeeming PlayStation gift cards, it is becoming trickier and less intuitive to do so.

This would suggest that this is the first step in implementing the rumoured "Spartacus" service that would merge PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now into a singular tiered subscription. The more you pay for your subscription, the further back into the PlayStation catalogue you could play with backwards compatibility support. To implement the service, PlayStation Now would cease to exist.

What do you think of the news? Is this truly a first step or just a streamlining of physical gods as Sony PR states? let us know in the comments!
